The Central Utility Plant (CUP) Technician must be experienced in all phases of steam generation, maintenance of boilers, chilled water systems, chillers, cooling tower, air compressors, water treatment, and auxiliary equipment. Responsibilities of the Central Utility Plant Technician include repairing Central Utility Plant equipment, control circuits, troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems for proper operation of equipment. The Central Utility Plant Technician tests, maintains, and repairs Central Utility Plant equipment and monitors contractors' work to ensure quality and code compliance.

Central Utility Plant Technician Essential Functions:

Including but not limited to:

  • Understands the operation and safety functions of high-pressure steam boilers including natural gas and fuel oil systems. Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs boilers, water treatment system, condensate return system, deaerator, feed water pumps, heat recovery system, and associated equipment.
  • Understands the operation of centrifugal chillers and support systems. Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and associated equipment.
  • Understands the operation of centrifugal air compressors, air dryers, and associated equipment. Maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs air compressors, coolers, cooling system, dryers and associated equipment.
  • Disassembles, repairs, and inspects equipment and parts in the Central Utility Plant.
  • Make periodic and daily inspections of all machinery. Adjusts and rebuilds valves. Replaces gaskets, repairs leaks, cleans filters, lubricates and overhauls equipment.
  • Monitors, observes, and maintains conditions that affect operation of the plant.
  • Monitors, observes, and analyzes equipment and system characteristics. Takes actions required to correct or change a condition as needed.
  • Takes readings, keeps logs and records. Performs routine periodic equipment checks and tests in accordance with standard operating practices, policies, and procedures.
  • Works with other Central Utility Plant personnel to start up, troubleshoot, or shut down equipment as required for corrective or preventive maintenance.
  • Observes and adheres to proper lock out and tag out of plant equipment and systems in accordance with clearance procedures, policies, and practices.
  • Provides training and instruction to other personnel and advises the Supervisor of Mechanics/Operators on level of job knowledge, skills, and abilities of personnel in training.
  • Attends training courses and studies independently to learn operation and maintenance requirements of Central Utility Plant facilities, equipment, and operation.
  • Complies with information provided on Material Safety Data Sheets for all products. Handles and stores items properly. Assists with cleaning of plant facilities, equipment and general housekeeping.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of the organization.

Central Utility Plant Technician Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as a Central Utility Plant mechanic or 10 years performing similar duties in a related position

OR

  • Instrumentation/Controls Associates degree or Electronics Technician Associates degree

OR

  • Military job training in a Military Occupations Specialty (MOS) field related to Central Utility Plants

OR

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Central Utility Plant Technician Core Competencies:

  • General knowledge of maintenance, startup, operation, and shutdown procedures and practices of central electric generating station steam and combustion turbine generators and auxiliary systems; methods, materials, and tools used in repairing mechanical and electrical equipment; safe operating and maintenance practices and procedures of high-pressure utility boiler components including drums, headers, reheaters; and associated valves, piping, and assemblies.
  • General knowledge of the practices of Central Utility Plant auxiliary systems, including electrical switchgear and breakers, fuel handling equipment, cooling towers, heat exchangers, fans, pumps, and motors.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to lift or displace up to 100 pounds.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safety rules and regulations, and safety precautions. Working knowledge of potential hazards and procedures for fire and explosion prevention.
  • Ability to adhere to all safety requirements established by Phoenix Investors.
  • Ability to read and comprehend technical bulletins, manufacturer's operating instructions, and information dealing with power plant principles and practices.
  • Ability to calculate, understand, and evaluate equipment performance, including heat transfer, equipment efficiencies, water quality, and other related parameters.
  • Ability to keep and maintain work records and make reports. Ability to read, understand, and comply with Material Safety Data Sheets.
  • Ability to work above normal heights: 10-100 feet and in confined spaces using safety equipment.
  • Ability to do intermediate-level mathematical calculations. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex technical oral and written instructions. Able to distinguish colors.
  • Must be able to use personal protection equipment properly and safely as directed or assigned.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather and operating conditions.
  • Ability to respond to utility or plant under emergency conditions.
  • Strong knowledge in the use of personal computers and numerous software applications such as Excel, Word, MS Outlook, etc.

Central Utility Plant Technician Conditions of Employment:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.
  • Flexibility to work non-traditional hours.

Experience:

  • Central Utility Plant Mechanic: 5 years (Preferred)
  • Mechanical Knowledge: 10 years (Preferred)
