Overview

General SummaryUnder the supervision and guidance of the Central Sterile Processing Supervisor and the Sterile Processing Manager, the Instrument Technician will interact in close conjunction with members of the surgical team and the Sterile Processing Team to ensure that instruments for surgical procedures are available as necessary. The instrument technician is responsible for the inspection and readiness of all instruments. Instruments not wrapped as sterile will require preparation via autoclaving, soaking in glutaraldehyde, processing in the Sterrad unit, etc. Cleaning, decontamination, terminal sterilization, and/or disinfection after a procedure will be required. Displaying the values of responsibility and integrity, the individual must be able to demonstrate and apply sterile processing knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the area.Essential Responsibilities1. Promote Mission Statement and C.A.R.E principles of organization.2. Knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures.3. Prioritization, organizational, and communication skills are necessary.4. Must be willing to stay current and knowledgeable regarding infection control, OSHA standards and HFAP standards by attending learning sessions on and off-site.5. Successful completion of on-the-job training with Surgical Services and Reid Health.6. Knowledge of aseptic technique.7. Knowledge of medical supplies, equipment, and medications.8. Must be self-motivated and able to work under minimal supervision.9. Must be able to lift assorted items.10. Must be able to assist with lifting, turning, and positioning of patients.2 | P a g e11. Must be able to stand, bend, push, pull and walk to move assorted heavy equipment.12. Must be flexible and diverse to function in a technologically complex environment.13. Must be able to plan work activities, think ahead and be able to work quickly and efficiently under pressure and stress.14. Receives instruments, scopes, and other equipment and checks for readiness, sterility/non-sterility, and completeness.15. Provides assistance in ensuring efficient and productive utilization of the operating rooms.16. Sterilizes according to accepted recommendations via autoclave, or Sterrad while maintaining standards of care as deemed appropriate.17. Facilitates on-time starts, case turnovers and accuracy of case preparation.18. Cleans and monitors operation of autoclaves. Responsible to communicate problems to Sterile Processing Manager and Clinical Coordinator.19. Coordinates activities for maintaining surgical instruments and equipment. Assists in maintaining equipment repair logs and develops an equipment database.20. Provides follow-up for routine surgical supply orders and back orders. Works closely with the Perioperative Materials Manager to coordinate special order items and equipment.21. Run appropriate checks on sterilization equipment and keep logs as appropriate.22. Reports malfunctioning, broken, missing instruments/equipment to team members.Communicates follow-up expectations to all appropriate personnel.23. Attends all required safety and training programs and can describe his or her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.24. Follows the Department and Reid Health exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens.25. Performs according to established departmental and hospital policies/procedures utilizing strict adherence to aseptic technique principles.26. Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.27. Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intradepartmental to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.28. Can immediately locate: Crash cart and defibrillator; Malignant Hyperthermia cart/kit29. Can demonstrate role in the Hazardous Materials and Waste Program, including procedures to follow in case of a spill.30. Complete Healthstream requirements as assigned.3 | P a g eQualificationsSuccessful completion of ROSE and Reid Health orientation and competency-based skills appropriate for the area assigned. Individual performance and competency-based skills are maintained through ongoing and continued professional educational offerings.Education Required: High School diploma or GED; Central Sterile Certification and/orSterile Processing Manager certificationEducation Preferred: Certified Registered Central Service TechnicianExperience Preferred: Minimum 1+ year experience in sterile processing oroperating room procedures.Key Service Behavior Expectations1.
