Medical Training Institute of New York is recruiting for an experienced Adjunct faculty member in the Central Sterile Processing Technician Instructor Program who exhibits strong communication skills and is willing to train students to become Certified Surgical Technologists. Candidates must have experience teaching in a classroom or/and in a synchronous environment and have a minimum of 3 years in the Operating Room.
This Part-time teaching position will begin immediately and provide instruction in the classroom with a laboratory setting. You should be fully committed to the Mission and Values of the Medical Training Institute of New York.
Summary
  • The adjunct faculty member is responsible for providing quality teaching and learning within the Surgical Technologist Program and maintaining established standards of the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA) in collaboration with full-time and adjunct program faculty. The adjunct faculty member reports to the Program Director.
  • Must be a Certified Central Sterile Processing Technician
  • Must have a minimum of 3 years of in-field work experience.
  • Must have an associate degree or higher.

Essential Functions
Responsibilities of the Sterile Processing Technician Instructor include, but are not limited to:
General:
  • Demonstrate commitment to the Mission and Objectives of the Medical Training Institute of New York
  • Abide by and support school policies, processes, procedures, and plans.
  • Emulate and hold students and themselves to professional standards in attitude, uniform, and grooming for their industry.
  • Instruction:
  • Provide effective instruction and facilitate student learning for the program.
  • Work with other faculty and administrators to build and/or maintain a curriculum with clear learning objectives. This includes textbook and software selection.
  • Prepare and follow course syllabi.
  • Develop and/or maintain lesson plans for classroom and lab activities.
  • Create supplemental instructional materials.
  • Emphasize employment as the central goal of the program.
  • Teach and require safety as a regular daily component of skill practice.
  • Schedule, supervise, debrief, and evaluate students in lab, clinical, externship, or other work-based learning activities.
  • Perform evaluations of student learning, using course objectives as a guide.
  • Ensure objective evaluation of student performance.
  • Provide security for assignment keys and testing to avoid cheating.
  • Provide grading scale and calculate grades for high school students.
  • Strive for continuous improvement in student learning.
  • Mentor students, providing regular feedback on progress, with the program's central goal being student success. This includes completing the program, successfully passing any required licensure or certification tests, and placement in related employment.
  • Utilize academic improvement plans, as required, when students fail to perform to minimum standards.
  • Maintain rolls and enter into NorthStar daily.
  • Update progress in NorthStar at least monthly or before the course ends.
  • Utilize the Learning Management System and orient new students to it.
  • Understand fundamentals of good hybrid instruction, including mastering new online technologies, finding and creating quality online content for students, modeling digital citizenship, communicating effectively online, and using student performance data to inform instruction.
  • Carefully respect the confidentiality of student information and refrain from discussing or releasing such information except within recognized limits.
  • Respond promptly to student concerns and/or appeals.
Program Activities
  • Be available to students via email, phone, or personal conferences. The method of contact and hours of availability should be communicated to students through the course syllabus each semester. Instructors should respond to student emails or messages within 24 hours on working days.
  • Hold classes as scheduled; notify the Program Director or Coordinator in advance if you are to be absent, and, if possible, arrange for a substitute instructor and assignments for the class. Keep an emergency lesson plan in the classroom for substitute use.
  • Keep updated student contact information to aid with placement.
  • Prepare and complete by due date information for quarterly spreadsheets to track Completion/Placement/Licensure.
  • Ensure that students participate in the program evaluation survey.
  • Create, maintain, and document meetings and conversations with local employers. Submit annually to the Program Director.
  • Participate actively with Employer Advisory Committee Meetings, including inviting new members from the industry.
  • Ensure that all advisory meetings meet established criteria.
  • Actively participate in COE accreditation assignments, including writing the program narrative and preparing evidence in compliance with established standards.
  • Participate in assessing and communicating needs for annual budget requests.
  • Inventory and provide security for School equipment, tools, and supplies.
  • Ensure cleanliness of classrooms and labs and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participate in forming the College Strategic Plan and accomplishing specific program strategies.
  • Maintain program budget and keep spending within established amounts.
  • Meet regularly with the Program Coordinator to report class activities and needs.

Professional Development:
  • Keep current on program information and skills by attending the school's regular professional development opportunities.
  • Complete annual professional development requirements for teacher training and program-specific skill updates.
  • Keep active contact with local employers to stay current with advancements in the industry.

Other Service to the School
  • As college administrators or peers requested, submit information or materials related to assigned duties promptly.
  • Serve on standing and ad hoc committees, advisory boards, hiring committees, or as a student organization advisor.
  • Attend local, regional, state, or national meetings where required or necessary for the program.
  • Mentor and/or assist in orienting new faculty.
  • Attend commencement or other ceremonies.
  • Attend departmental, divisional, and college-wide meetings.
  • Accept share of responsibility for departmental activities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Contribute to the culture of the College by contributing positively to relationships with others at the college avoiding negative or discriminatory talk.
Qualifications / Requirements
  • Must be a High School graduate.
  • Current CRCST certification is required.
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience.
  • Education and leadership experience preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from a Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology program at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or training from an otherwise recognized training entity (e.g., hospital-based program) in Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology or training from an institution located outside of the United States and its territories in Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology. OR
  • Four (4) years of job-related training and experience for applicants not graduates from an accredited Sterile Processing or Surgical Technology program.
  • Three (3) years of occupational (i.e., practical) experience as a Sterile Processing Technician or in a closely related field.
  • Certified Registered Central Sterile Technician (CRCST) or Certified Sterile Processing Department Technician (CSPDT) certification
  • Current license, certification or other credential as required by local, state, and/or federal laws to work in the field.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and computer skills.
