Central Office Technician Level I-IV **JOB IS 100% TRAVEL**

SUMMARY: The Telecommunications Equipment Installer I is responsible for the installation and maintenance of telecommunication equipment for a variety of carriers. This includes fiber, transport equipment and all critical infrastructures within a Central Office. This role will provide high-quality service in customer technical spaces including data centers, mobile telephone switch centers, Central Office wire centers, and designated enterprise spaces.


Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Overtime and Saturday may be required based on business need. Other duties may be assigned:
  • Physically place, remove, or modify non-working equipment including the following:
  • Cable trays and/or racking
  • Data equipment cabinets and frames, data servers, switches, routers, repeaters, bridges, gateways, multiplexers, transceivers, firewalls
  • Identify, label, measure, and physically route the cables that supply AC and/or DC power or transmit data in various technical spaces.
  • Read, analyze, and interpret detailed specifications and drawings, blueprints, schematics, and method of procedures (MOPs)
  • Complete operations paperwork (e.g., expense reports, timesheets, job documentation, etc.) including daily job status reports as requested.
  • Work and assist to complete tasks per direction and oversight of lead installer.
  • Act as a customer contact; interface with customers and local supervisors regarding project status
  • Interact with all members of the organization including Installation, Engineering, Project Management
  • Perform other duties as requested.
  • Adhere to, promote, and accept responsibility for compliance to Federal and Local Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, Industry Consensus Standards, and UTS Safety Program Manual.
  • Participate in job site safety/hazard analysis.
  • Lead various types of installation projects
  • Read and interpret detailed specifications and drawings, blueprints, schematics, and method of procedures (MOPs)
  • Install Frame and rack builds
  • Run multiple cable types including coaxial, power, fiber, and network transmission, use a variety of specific connectors and terminating procedures Lacing, stitching, sewing cables
  • Terminate DC power, rectifiers, PDUs, BDFB/BDCBBs, inverters, converters, raycaps and associated infrastructure used in telecommunications networks
  • Terminate cables using RJ45 connectors
  • Clean and scope fiber connectors, Document light levels and other readings with job specific testing equipment (ex: OTDR)
  • Install ironwork (ladder rack) cable paths, horizontal and vertical pathways for fiber optic cable management systems, and create a physical cable path for equipment and cable design
  • Tests and evaluates systems to determine efficiency, reliability, and compatibility with existing system
  • Complete detailed documents of work performed and provide daily status updates
  • Ability to serve as the installation in-charge person
  • Able to communicate with customers on all aspects of the job throughout the duration on the job.
  • Other duties as assigned by UTS Supervisor


Qualifications and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (required)
  • Previous experience required.
  • Formal “Basic Installation” training course is required (or equivalent on the job training)
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings and documentation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the phases of product installation
  • Experience with major carriers like AT&T, Verizon, CenturyLink, Sprint, SBC, T-Mobile, etc.
  • Experience installing major OEM equipment like Ciena (5430/6500), Juniper (MX480/960/2020), Cisco (NCS2000/4000/ ASR9010), Calix C7, GPON, Fujitsu Flashwave 9500, Coriant hiT 7300, Cisco ASR, etc.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good customer facing skills
  • Proficient using various computer equipment such as laptops, tablets, etc. as well as knowledgeable with various software platforms
  • Ability to adapt to changing environments
  • Valid Drivers License


Work Environment:

  • May be required to work in a raised floor environment.
  • May be required to work in small crawl spaces and/or shaft ways.
  • May be required to work in facility manholes.
  • May be required to hand dig or trench outside.
  • May be required to work on top of buildings.
  • Must maintain cleanliness and organization of all storage, staging and work areas on-site.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work outdoors, on ladders, and in confined spaces
  • Ability to work with/around electrical wires and/or ESD products
  • Ability to work remotely at construction or installation sites
  • Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, squat, climb, lift, pull and push.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
  • Distinguish colors and fine print accurately
