Job Description- Cellar Lead

Classification: Full-time, Non-exempt

Compensation: Hourly, Bi-weekly

Reports to:  Winemaker

                            


Summary:

The Cellar Lead is the main contact for all actions and operations that occur in the cellar.  You will be responsible for maintaining a good working environment to produce and manufacture all wine and cider in the cellar.  This requires a mechanical inclination and impeccable sanitation practices.  The Cellar Lead will work directly with the Winemaker and other cellar staff to manage the production area in a way to ensure the maintenance of our excellent product quality.

Essential Functions

  • Works closely with the Winemaker to perform duties and activities related to harvesting, processing, fermenting, filtering, bottling, and inventory of all wines and ciders.
  • Know and understand the operation of all winery equipment including pumps, presses, stemmer/crusher, and bottling equipment.
  • Responsible for inventory maintenance and tracking of the following:
    • Raw Materials & additives
    • Packaging Materials (i.e. bottles, labels, corks, etc.)
    • Cleaning & maintenance chemicals
  • Make chemical additions to juice and wine as directed by Winemaker.
  • Understands and exemplifies the theory and practices of basic food manufacturing hygiene and sanitation.
    • Cleans and sanitizes all required winery equipment.
    • Cleans floors, tank exteriors, tank interiors, hoses, other wine making equipment, walls, floors, sinks, and tables.
    • Maintains organization of all accessories and equipment.
  • Oversees intake of all raw materials for wine and cider production.
  • In collaboration with Winemaker, oversee receiving of all other production goods to the production facility.
  • Coordinates and performs regular deliveries and pickups.
  • Follows and maintains all safety guidelines and procedures per company policy.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping of all wine production.
  • Submits complete & accurate work orders.
  • Acts as company representative, as needed, for tours, tastings, wine dinners, and other off-site events.
  • Performs wine sensory tasting and testing wine.

Work Environment

The wine/cider production facility work environment is often a high stress environment where staff can be exposed to louder than average noise levels and a variety of unpleasant odors.  Cellar team members also face additional hazards such as wet, slippery surfaces created by cleaning practices as well as the nature of wine production processes.


Physical Demands

This position requires daily activities such as: bending, lifting approximately 50lbs+ regularly, and standing for extended periods of time (8+ hours).


Required Experience & Skills

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior supervisory experience in food production and/or food manufacturing environment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Possess a commitment to teamwork, personal integrity, and a strong work ethic.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic Google & Microsoft Office skills (Excel, Word).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must have an earnest desire to understand winemaking principles.

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Decision-making skills, organizational and conflict resolution skills.
  • Pro-active, self-motivated and successful problem solver.
  • ServSafe certification or equivalent food manufacturing certification.

Additional eligibility qualifications

  • Certified forklift operator.
  • Already possess or ability to obtain a server’s permit in the State of Indiana.
