Description:
The Montana Department of Transportation is recruiting for two Maintenance Technicians in Conrad. If you enjoy working outdoors and being part of a crew dedicated to the traveling public this may be the position for you.
The Maintenance Technician operates a variety of equipment, including trucks, to perform regular maintenance activities such as ditch cleaning, patching, overlays, fence repairs, mowing, bridge repair and material or equipment transportation. In winter, loads sanding material and performs snow removal and sanding. Responsible for overall function operations of machines including preoperational checking, scheduling servicing, adding fluids, changing pins, and cutting edges, etc. Performs related work as required.
Requires a valid Montana Commercial Operators License (Class A, Type II) with tanker and airbrake endorsements and no restrictions and a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC). Applicants with a learner's permit have 30 days to obtain the necessary Montana Commercial Operators License.
Successful applicant must live within 45 road miles of the assigned maintenance section and must have a telephone or be reasonably accessible to the section headquarters.
This agency may use a training assignment. Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules. Conditions of the training assignment will be stated in writing at the time of hire.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • One (1) year experience driving heavy truck and operating construction equipment. Requires knowledge of highway maintenance and equipment operation including basic diesel/gasoline vehicle maintenance. Basic math, recordkeeping, computer skills and the ability to make estimates of materials needed.
  • A valid Montana Commercial Operators License (Class A, Type II) with endorsements for air brakes and tankers is required with no restriction for operating a manual transmission and a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC). Applicants with a learner's permit or a Class B CDL have 30 days to obtain the necessary Montana Commercial Operators License.
  • Driver's record will be verified. Successful applicants will be required to sign a release form which authorizes the Department to obtain the applicant's permanent driving records. Compliance with Mont. Admin. R. 2.6.201, "State Vehicle Use," and MDT Policy # 6.03.001, "Addendum to Risk Management and Tort Defense Division State Vehicle Use Policy" are conditions of employment.

  • This position is covered under a Career Ladder Advancement Policy. Applicants may be eligible for placement up to a Maintenance Technician Level III if they have documented relevant experience from a city, county, or state highway road department(s) where they were employed for the purpose of road maintenance. Experience will determine level placement and wage. Pay and placement in the career ladder is based on time in grade, classroom training, practical MDT experience and successful completion of the MDT Maintenance Academy. Reaching maximum Maintenance Tech pay can take up to five years.
  • This position belongs to the AFSCME bargaining unit. The successful candidate will receive more information about the union and the option to join the union during the onboarding process.
