Job Description
Modifies and creates descriptive metadata for physical materials acquired by ASU Library. Materials may be in any format (including books and digital/electronic resources) and any Roman alphabet language. Establishes names/identities for the NAF via NACO. Provides and/or reviews metadata for electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) and other digital resources in the ASU Repository as necessary. Processes added copies/volumes. Supports outsourcing activities. May assist with ebook record loading as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Environment
  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, standing and walking.
  • Physical demands include stooping, bending, reaching, lifting up to 25 pounds and pushing objects of varying weights up to 100 pounds
  • Requires extensive computer work using a variety of programs and systems.
  • Exposure to dust and other airborne materials
  • Close review of completed tasks
  • May oversee assignments to student workers to ensure timely completion and/or to provide guidance or assistance to questions

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience cataloging in a MARC environment, particularly in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience with non-MARC metadata standards.
  • Experience using online library systems, particularly Alma and OCLC.
  • Experience with Library of Congress and/or Dewey Decimal classification schemes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience with MARC Edit or similar metadata management application.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of at least one modern European language other than English.

Essential Duties
  • Modifies, creates and/or enhances descriptive metadata for physical materials acquired by ASU Library, upgrading sub-standard OCLC records as needed. Maintains and establishes names/identities in the NACO Authority File. Processes added copies/volumes. Resolves problems encountered in the course of cataloging using all available resources, including OCLC and the ASU catalog, and acquisitions and cataloging staff as necessary.
  • Assists in the management of the activities for outsourcing materials in all languages, including preparing materials for shipment and maintaining shipping records. May assist with reviewing MARC records using MARC Edit, and importing files post-review.
  • Reviews, enhances and/or creates metadata for digital repository resources, including metadata for electronic theses and dissertations, and reviewing and/or providing metadata for other digital collections.
  • Provides assistance with loading and reviewing ebook vendor records as needed.
  • Assists with special cataloging and maintenance projects as needed.
