Duties:
- Serves as the broadcast advisor for the UH Hilo/HawCC student radio program.
- Serves as the student radio program’s primary resource regarding radio broadcast functions, including ethics and all aspects related to radio management, operations and broadcasting.
- Provides staff support for the student radio program, advising and assisting radio staff in meeting their responsibilities as embodied in the Board of Media Broadcasting Charter, Bylaws and Job Descriptions.
- Advises radio management in implementing responsible broadcast policy.
- Provides mandatory student member training and development workshops to core radio staff in the following areas:
- Ethics, rules, and responsibilities of student radio staff.
- Radio broadcast skills, including, but not limited to, general day-to-day operations of a radio station, disk jockeying, interviewing, program & music direction, news reporting, program development, radio promotion.
- Fiscal responsibilities and operations of the radio program.
- Maintains a current file of all required workshop activities.
- Assist the URH General Manager with the URH’s relationship with the Board of Media Broadcasting (BoMB), providing input to BoMB on policies and procedures that govern the relationship between the radio program and BoMB.
- Educates the college and greater community regarding the constitutional right of the student radio program to conduct free investigations into matters that affect their community and to broadcast without fear of restraint or administrative censorship.
- Builds and maintains positive relationships with relevant academic programs, particularly Communication and Business, to maximize students’ participation in radio broadcast activities and promote students’ ability to integrate classroom learning with broadcast activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Journalism, English, Communication, or Public Relations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two (2) years of active on-air radio broadcasting experience.
- Functional knowledge of radio program and/or station production and management.
- Functional knowledge of radio broadcast ethics.
- Functional knowledge of managing a radio program budget.
- Proficiency with state-of-the-art post-production programs and on-air software.
- Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships, in a multi-cultural environment, with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
Desirable Qualifications:
- At least five (5) years of related professional experience in the radio and/or media broadcasting field.
- Previous professional experience working for a radio station.
- Knowledge and/or experience with UH Policies and Procedures.
