This job is first and foremost about being a great companion to your elderly client. This might mean engaging in conversation on topics of common interest or participating in activities together. In addition, you may be asked to prepare meals, run errands, or help with household tasks. Just think about many of the things you might do for your own parents or grandparents. Those who have caregiving experience are encouraged to apply.
In the past several years, Duet has hired hundreds of artists, performers, creatives, graduate students, and second-career seekers to work part-time or full-time supporting elder Adults in New York City. Our positions provide a unique opportunity to earn competitive pay while building a meaningful connection with elder Adults in need of support at home.
The caregiving experience of our applicants varies from personal experiences supporting family members to significant paid experience as a trained or certified caregiver. Experience is just one of the considerations in our hiring process. We also want to know about your interests and experiences, along with your level of enthusiasm for this type of work. In the process of getting to know you, our staff will be better prepared to match you with a compatible client.
Why Work For Us?
- Earn very competitive compensation of $18-20 per hour, without doing any hands-on personal care or lifting (e.g. no bathing or toileting assistance)
- Once matched with a client, you will receive ongoing support and training from our professional staff; you will not be “left to your own devices”
- You will have the unique opportunity to get immersive, evidence-based training in supporting adults with dementia; these are interactive virtual experiences that allow you to ask questions and role-play situations that caregivers really face
- We care about the individuality of our caregivers and our clients. We want to know about your interests, experiences, and passions so that we can thoughtfully match you with our clients
- You will be recognized when you do a great job and improve the life of an older adult
Typical Activities and Responsibilities
- Providing companionship to older adults and individuals with chronic conditions; this may include discussing current events or shared interests, or taking trips to cultural or entertainment venues
- Assisting with non-physical tasks such as meal preparation, grocery shopping, and light housework like folding laundry or throwing away leftover food items
- Safety supervision, standby assistance with ambulation or certain other tasks, medication reminders, adherence to care plans
- For clients with dementia, you’ll need to communicate effectively, provide mental stimulation, and/or safety supervision, as necessary
