Summary
Career Design Coaches advance the affirming, diverse, and inclusive learning environment established for undergraduate students on the BGSU campus by establishing opportunities for students to create prototype experiences that "test" the hypotheses students have about their future careers. Career Design Coaches facilitate chances for students to engage with industry professionals, alumni, and company/organization representatives through individual meetings, workshops, and events. Career Design Coaches also build strong relationships with students with the focus of enhancing students' job search self-efficacy. Specifically, the Career Design Coaches focus more heavily on two of the four pillars of life design at BGSU which are the pillars surrounding Career & Connections.
Career Design Coaches support a caseload of students, whom they will engage in non-classroom and co-curricular contexts throughout the majority of their college experience. In this capacity, Career Design Coaches are primarily responsible for ensuring each student they work with has the tools and connections need to test out the career-driven hypotheses they have developed during earlier stage life design programming. Career Design Coaches will collaborate closely with campus partners to ensure that students referred to Career Design Coaches will engage with their respective industry/field, learn by doing in an experiential manner, and ultimately be more confident in their chosen career path upon graduation.
Essential Functions
  • Provide on-going coaching to assigned/referred students and support of caseload students who are formally engaged in co-op and internship programs. Collaborate with students from diverse backgrounds to identify their career interests and challenges. Help students evaluate internship and job opportunities, location considerations, offer/benefits packages, and ultimately ensure that the student/graduate is as confident in the opportunity as possible. During this process, retain an understanding of the resources across campus and within colleges relevant to caseload to allow for the ability to provide referrals to campus partners as appropriate (e.g., advising, counseling, and financial aid).
  • Provide proactive and responsive outreach to assigned students based on various data sources (e.g., caseload determination, referral sources, etc.) Exercise cultural competence and an awareness of the intersection of identities as they build rapport and trust with students about career competencies, career self-efficacy, and the Career Design process. Connect students to appropriate external connections to allow for "testing" of Career Design hypotheses. Encourage and recognize successful students.
  • Develop and implement caseload relevant custom Career Design programming, collaborating with colleagues across campus to create an inclusive environment that acknowledges the unique needs of students, including neurodiversity, marginalized and historically underserved students including students of color, first-generation, LGBTQ+, and international students.
  • Participate in on-going training and development internally as well as externally, including a community of practice among coaches and key campus partners as well as within industry associations, trade-groups, etc. to ensure the support provided to students is current.
