Reporting to the department manager, the Cardiovascular Technologist provides the technical expertise during Electrophysiology (EP) and assists with other cardiovascular or interventional procedures. This position must be an expert who is competent in the use of EP monitoring / stimulation systems, intra-cardiac echocardiography and 3D mapping systems. Collaborates with all disciplines for well-coordinated care. Prepares patient for the procedure by performing assigned tasks (i.e. scrub, recording, circulating). Assists with other activities that will facilitate effective/efficient use of the resources in the pre and post-procedure phases. Performs related clerical, cleaning, stocking and service duties as needed.
1. Assists Cardiac Electrophysiologist by setting up and operating specialized equipment to include: a physiological data recording system and related computers, programmable stimulators, and various generators (e.g., cryo-ablation, RF, and microwave ablation) for ablation procedures. In addition, the CVT analyzes electrocardiograph data, perform program stimulation of the heart, induce and terminate cardiac arrhythmia by overdrive pacing or DC cardio version, apply energy to catheters for purposes of arrhythmia ablation. The CVT should be well versed in full application use of the recording system including starting and retrieving studies, pacemaps, settings, pacing, identifying EGMs, measurements, and be able to handle system troubleshooting.
2. Assists Cardiologist/Surgeon in the performance of invasive surgical procedures related to intra-cardiac defibrillators, pacemakers, coronary angiography/intervention, peripheral angiography/intervention, structural heart procedures, sets up sterile table, assist in the application of sterile drapes, hands sterile instruments and sutures to the physician during the procedure and performs after-care of surgical instruments. The surgical assistant provides aid in exposure/access, hemostasis, contrast injection and other intraoperative technical functions that will assist the surgeon to carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient
3. Provides expertise, educates and mentors EP staff on EP topics based on their knowledge, clinical and technical skills. Serves as a role model and clinical resource for EP staff and other members of the healthcare team. Assists with review and updates of EP procedure manual and protocols. Maintains a constant awareness of new standards of care, medical products, equipment and technology through appropriate society involvement and self-directed education.
4. Recognizes and properly utilizes supplies and equipment for procedures demonstrating knowledge of anatomy and physiology in relation to the procedures performed, indications, disease processes involved and treatment options.
5. Implements safe, competent and efficient care to patients within departmental policies, procedures and standards. Foresees potential problems, adapts priorities and plans independently with and without medical direction to general information/data indicative of potential urgent or emergent life-threatening risks, initiates action to reduce or correct the risk per ACLS guidelines.
6. Accountable for accurate documentation and patient procedure records, enters data such as patient demographics in imaging, hemodynamic and ancillary equipment. Assists with accurate data collection, documentation and data entry for national registries including but not limited to ACC/NCDR ICD registry.
7. Works collaboratively with manger to continually maintain hemodynamic recording and archiving systems, EP recording systems and their respective database libraries.
8. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies and procedures.
