Job description

The Research Scientist I (RS I) Epidemiology/Biostatistics (Epi/Bio) works under the supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I, Chief, Surveillance and Analytics Unit. The RS I will participate in the development and implementation of the data and research aspects of cannabis surveillance and prevention programs. The RS I writes reports, publications, fact sheets, data briefs, and content for posting to websites (e.g., Substance and Addiction Prevention Branch (SAPB) website) and social media. Educational resources are driven by surveillance data to address health inequities and are prepared for dissemination to diverse audiences. The RS I conducts statistical analyses and designs and maintains data visualizations using platforms such as Tableau. The RS I will be responsible for ensuring the scientific quality of all administrative and research reporting requirements. Minimal travel is required to participate in local and regional activities. Some overnight stays may be required.

The Substance and Addiction Prevention Branch (SAPB), within the Center for Healthy Communities, aims to reduce individual, social, and environmental harm from addiction and substance use through research-driven prevention, education, and treatment. SAPB houses California Department of Public Health's (CDPH) youth cannabis prevention, alcohol, overdose, and problem gambling programs, creating synergy between substance use and addiction prevention efforts. In addition to efforts related to addiction and substance use, SAPB examines a wide range of societal, community, and social influences on individual consumption and the resulting social and behavioral outcomes. This work supports Department-wide initiatives around behavioral health (e.g., mental health and substance use).

  • Experience or interest in maintaining data dashboards (e.g., Tableau) and writing documentation for existing dashboards
  • Knowledge of behavioral health, substance use, and addiction research
  • Knowledge of health equity and social determinants of health research
