SUMMARY:

MCAD is seeking a Campus Safety Officer. The Campus Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure campus environment while providing a high level of customer service. Often a primary point of contact for MCAD Community members who have questions, concerns, and/or may be in crisis, this role is critical in providing a compassionate and professional response to campus needs. All duties will be carried out in accordance with local, state and federal laws, as well as college policies. The Campus Safety Officer must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.

DETAILS: This is a full time, non-exempt position expected to work 40 hours a week, Friday - Tuesday, 11:00pm - 7:00am. This position reports to Campus Safety Supervisor and is paid $20/hr plus a $0.75 shift differential.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs all duties with customer service and compassion in mind, as it relates to students, staff, faculty, and MCAD guests. Builds and maintains professional relationships with MCAD community members, including students, staff, faculty, guests, prospective students, etc. 
  • Communicates directly with community members and campus visitors either by telephone, electronically or face to face; responding promptly to questions, inquiries, customer concerns, etc. handling and resolving when possible, with professionalism and clarity.
  • Patrol the college buildings and property surrounding the campus, remaining alert for all accidents, incidents and irregularities, and reporting all such conditions.
  • Responds to incoming calls, responding to those related to the scope of Campus Safety, and routes appropriately those that are not in scope.
  • Respond to emergencies by assessing the situation, employing tact, diplomacy, respect, and individual judgment to remedy and/or maintain control and calm. 
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing equity, diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
  • When emotions are high, acknowledging the reality of the student or community member with respect and empathy, while also maintaining calm and tact. 
  • Proactively engage with members of the MCAD community, with respect and awareness of the diversity of background, experience, and thought that exists within the community. 
  • In providing remedy to situations on campus, being clear with confirmation of the plan to repair, correct, or address the concern or issue. 
  • Proactively familiarizes self with campus, college policies, department policies, and local, state and federal laws for the purpose of:
    • Protecting life and property.
    • Proactively preventing and/or responding to violations of campus policy and/or violations of applicable laws and ordinances. 
    • Apprehending and detaining those engaged in activities of criminal nature.
    • Noting and reporting suspicious behavior. 
    • Assisting the community and Campus whenever possible.
  • Monitor Campus Safety systems, responding and escalating as needed, including but not limited to: 
    • Fire control systems and alarms
    • Surveillance cameras located throughout the campus.
    • Radio traffic, including other departments and the police when applicable.
    • Burglar alarm system
  • Prepare necessary reports relating to all incidents encountered on applicable forms in a precise manner acceptable for outside distribution, including maintaining incident report information and keeping logs and files up-to-date.
  • Keep the dispatch, office areas, and MCAD vehicles secure at all times, prohibiting unauthorized persons from accessing. Maintain office and vehicle cleanliness.
  • Record and secure all lost and found items, and follow Campus Safety procedures for returning the property to the owner.
  • Enforce parking rules and regulations for all MCAD parking locations. 
  • This position is considered essential personnel and must be available outside of normal working hours when needed to support the college operations including, but not limited to, events, emergency situations and coverage for absences.  Vacations are normally limited during those times.
    • Available to work after hours and/or on weekends in emergency situations.
    • Available to work additional hours around key campus event periods. Black out periods for paid time off benefits may apply to these periods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Represents MCAD's vision, purpose, and values in day to day work and interactions with MCAD students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community.

Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma, or equivalent, required.  Associate's or Bachelor's degree, preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • First Aid and CPR certification strongly preferred.
  • Training in de-escalation, self-defense, security and/or police training preferred.
  • General security experience, particularly in a college environment, preferred.  
  • General customer service experience, strongly preferred. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel and Word) or equivalent software, experience required. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of law enforcement and the key issues that impact a security officer.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in written and oral communication and customer service skills, as well as interpersonal skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize when dealing with multiple high-priority situations.
  • Strong problem solving skills and technical aptitude.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication and collaborate across departments. 


ENVIRONMENT: This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
