Position: Campus Facilities & Custodial Specialist
Department: Facilities
Reports to: Chief of Operations
Compensation: $15-$17/hour, Non-Exempt
Schedule: 8:00-11:00am, 4 days/week (one weekend day required)
Location: Kansas City Campus for Animal Care

Job Purpose:
The KC Pet Project Campus Facilities and Custodial Specialist plays a critical role in ensuring our new animal shelter building, contents and surrounding property maintains its pristine condition.
  • This individual must be able to work at a rapid pace and have great physical stamina and manual dexterity.
  • Experience with general janitorial cleaning to include a working knowledge of safe and appropriate chemical application and removal is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate would also have experience using such equipment as a motorized floor cleaner/buffer, commercial vacuums, etc.
  • The daily schedule for this position will consist of approximately 80% building/property cleaning with supervision, 10% warehousing/organizational/receiving and 10% other duties assigned

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Use cleaning supplies and equipment to keep the interior of the building looking clean and professional
  • Assist the facilities team in performing limited landscaping activities, including the maintenance of sidewalks and parking areas, and the removal of trash and snow
  • Clean the interior of building including floors, rugs, windows and wall surfaces with disinfectant
  • Dust commonly used items like desks, door handles, office tools and phones
  • Oversee and organize storage and inventory of all our cleaning supplies at the campus
  • Empty all trash and recycling bins indoors and outdoors
  • Clean, sanitize, and stock restrooms daily
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks based on a schedule created by the facility maintenance team
  • Complete minor repairs, like switching lightbulbs and unclogging toilets
  • Assist the Chief of Operations with coordinating vendor activities including working with contractors on building and equipment repairs. Welcome delivery trucks
  • Conduct daily walkthroughs inside the building, as well as outdoors around building, in parking lot, and grounds
  • Good interpersonal skills with polite and courteous demeanor toward staff, customers, clients, and visitors to the campus
  • Working Conditions:
  • Potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, high noise levels, extreme temperatures, hazardous chemicals, and sharp objects. Able to lift up to 50 lb., long periods of standing, bending, stooping, reaching, animal handling, and restraint in an animal shelter-type setting.

  • Believes in the mission of the KC Pet Project and understands the lifesaving relationship between the main campus and offsite locations.
  • Treats animals humanely, with love and concern both on and off the job and transmit these values to others.
  • Adheres to all KCPP organizational policies and procedures.
  • Adheres to all KCPP safety policies and reports injuries to Director within 24 hours of injury.
  • Makes a good appearance, positive attitude, and have the ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Communicates regularly with their manager about departmental issues.
  • Demonstrates flexible and efficient time management and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Participates in meetings with other KCPP personnel, including and shares ideas and suggestions designed to improve working conditions and the organization's ability to meet its lifesaving objectives.
  • Can lift up to 50 lbs. long periods of standing, bending, and intermittent exposure to high noise levels.
  • A willingness and enthusiasm for a continued state of learning regarding animal welfare.

Attendance and Dependability:
Must be able to report to work at the scheduled time, can be depended on to complete work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner and is conscientious about assignments.
Qualifications/Educational Background:
  • Must be at least 21 years old; High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with superiors, colleagues and individuals inside and outside of KC Pet Project.
  • Has tact and above average communication and customer service skills
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and must be able to convey a positive and professional image to the public and employees.
  • Possessions of a valid driver’s license and safe driving record acceptable to KC Pet Project’s insurance carrier.
