POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Resident Camp Associate Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Camper Development and Retention Director will assist with all activities associated with camper recruitment, cabin life and counselors in training, supporting other camp activities as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Lead new camper recruitment strategies to increase summer camp enrollment.
  • Develop a system for Camper Development, recognition, and engagement throughout the year to increase retention.
  • Build lasting relationships with current Camp Thunderbird overnight camp families including developing an an ambassador program to bring in new families.
  • Enrich the Counselor in Training program to establish a culture of respect, service, responsibility, and safety in our teen leadership development program.
  • Provide leadership to the seasonal leadership team and staff as assigned.
  • Provide cabin life support during summer season.
  • Direct leadership of assigned programs within Overnight Camp.
  • Leverage alumni connections to expand the Thunderbird reach, increasing fundraising and recruitment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor degree in recreation, education or related field or minimum 4 years of leadership experience in a related field with comparable program growth.
  • Minimum 2-3 years' experience in resident camp or related programming.
  • Ability to collaborate as a contributing member of the Camp Thunderbird team.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively work/interact with diverse populations.
  • Focus on customer service and excellent program quality with the ability to supervise, guide, develop and coach staff and counselors in training to deliver the same.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time outside of summer.
  • Ability to obtain Coast Guard Certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain current YMCA Lifeguard certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain BSS Trainer certification.
  • Ability to obtain Mental Health First Aid certification within 6 month of hire.
  • Be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver's license in their current state of residence.
  • High ethical standards and possess strong personal and professional integrity.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook and database management.
  • Complete all required staff trainings, included but not limited to, CPR, AED, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention, Van/Minibus Driver Safety, and Departmental Trainings prior to working as a Van/Minibus driver

The YMCA of Greater Charlotte requires all applicants to complete the following prior to their first day of driving:
  • Approval from the candidate for the YMCA to check their MVR. (Motor Vehicle Record)
  • Completion of the Redwoods Defensive Driving online training course
  • Behind the Wheel (BTW) training yearly. Year two is a ride along.
  • Basic Safety Series certification and all trainings and certifications in accordance with the prememployment standards for all new hires.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule with irregular work hours.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
  • Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
