Job Title: Program Specialist: Camp Crafts Arts Specialist

Classification: Nonexempt (Seasonal)

Reports to: This position reports to the Arts Coordinator and the Assistant Director of Camps

Position Purpose:

To further the camp's mission through developing and delivering Camp Craft activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers' ages and abilities. Assist in the management of the Arts building and related equipment and supplies.

Essential Job Functions:

    • Develop and deliver a camp craft arts program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers

  • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
  • Evaluate the abilities of campers and include staff in activity participation.
  • To design and deliver camp craft activities that use different materials, use the camp's natural materials, and use the arts center resources most efficiently.
  • To program using past camp craft-based activities such as jewelry, woodworking, and nature art.
  • Evaluate the success of arts programs

    • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures

  • Support counselors in the art studio and explain their role during the activity.
  • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures: cleanliness, safe material use, are aware of all camper and staff needs, etc.
  • Assist campers with the process and final product of the camp crafts art period.

    • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the camp crafts section and the entire arts cabin

  • Maintain the art equipment, including utensils, markers, paints, nature and wood materials, jewelry, and beading supplies
  • Ensure the security of art equipment and supplies, including inventory organization and proper paint/ glue storage/ disposal, and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner. Communicate with the Arts Coordinator about the needs of the arts cabin.
  • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Clean the camp crafts area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.


Other Job Duties:


  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.

  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to learn and build relationships with campers and staff outside of the art cabin.

Relationships:

Program Specialists who fall under the "Arts" will report to the Arts Coordinator. The Arts Coordinator will report to the Assistant Director of Camps.

Qualifications (Minimum qualifications and experience)


  • Documented experience in the arts, particularly arts instruction or documented training and experience.


Knowledge Skills and Abilities:


  • Training and experience in teaching arts to children.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in an arts cabin or near a campfire.
  • Experience in program planning and recipe ordering ahead of time to ensure the arts cabin is fully stocked.
  • The ability to set up and clean up a workspace.


Salary Range: $5,000- $6,000

Physical Aspects of the Position:


  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Ability to observe staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate management techniques.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.


Some physical requirements of an arts specialist could be endurance, including standing, some bending, and stretching. Requirement for eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to make projects and assist campers. Requires range of hearing and eyesight necessary to maintain a safe environment and carefully observe camper and staff participation.
