Job description

Camp Health Supervisor

Under minimal supervision, the Camp Health Supervisor provides effective healthcare program by providing direct health assistance, assessment and medication administration for the campers and staff, in a manner consistent with State of Nevada Licensing Rules, American Camp Association (ACA) Guidelines, GSUSA Guidelines and Safety Activity Checkpoints. Work directly with Unit Leaders, Unit Staff and girls as needed.
Room and board is provided including weekly transportation to and from Camp Frias Frontier, Alamo.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following; other duties may need to be assigned according to the particular needs of the council and areas of supervision.
Program
*Comfortable working with campers ages 5-18 and staff 18+.
*Provide health care to meet the individual needs of campers and staff.
*Deliver first aid and emergency care following camp procedures as needed.
*Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including cabins, wagons, kitchen, offices, equine and all activity areas.
*Check and restock (if necessary) supplies in all first aid kits on a weekly basis.
*Provide or ensure that during staff orientation that following topics are covered: standing orders, health office hours, specific camper health and social needs, health office procedures, emergency procedures, staff health, assessment of campers, policies on contacting parents, transportation to outside health facilities, accident prevention and risk managements, nutrition, and first aid in the camp setting.
*Ensure staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid.
*Establish and maintain a camp infirmary equipped with necessary equipment and supplies.
*Ensure staff and camper health paperwork is current and on file.
*Review and file all incoming staff and camper health forms.
*Review camper information and share pertinent information regarding existing medical conditions and necessary precautions with staff that have direct responsibility for the camper.
*Collect incoming prescribed medications from campers and staff and ensure that they are dispensed in a manner consistent with required instructions.
*Be familiar will all “standing medical orders” as written by the campers and staff’s physician.
*Participate in camp leadership and staff meetings.
*Assists in implementation of the rules of the State of Nevada Licensing Guidelines, American Camp Association (ACA), GSUSA.
Staff & Camper Support
*Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude, behavior and following of camp procedures.
*Provide supervision, support, guidance, regular feedback, and support to unit counselor, other team members/co-workers, and campers.
*Gives instruction in health and safety and first aid to staff and campers as requested and when deemed appropriate.
*Maintain positive, professional relationships with camper and staff.
*Prioritize the needs of campers.
*Provide an environment where every camper/Girl Scout feels welcome, safe, and included.
*Apply basic youth development principles to empower campers, embrace diversity, aid in competency development, and build connections.
*Help staff and campers to respect others, demonstrate how to appreciate differences and similarities so that campers get the most out of their stay at camp.
Develop and facilitates health and safety trainings and/or information sharing for camp staff in coordination with the Camp Director.
*Act decisively and competently in medical emergencies and make appropriate decisions regarding outside treatment.
*Maintains contact with local hospital/emergency facilities. Takes responsibility for calling the hospital/emergency facility as needed for camper and staff health concerns.
*Establishes and maintains regular infirmary hours.
*Notifies Camp Director when parents should be advised of serious illness or accident.
*Provide nightly “on-call” assistance to units and respond to emergencies as needed.
*Be available to campers and staff at all times during duty hours.
*Do what needs to be done so that every camper has a great summer at camp.
Health & Safety
*Follow health care procedures as described in camp’s policies and standing orders.
*Set up/Tear Down and manage Camp Frias Frontier’s Health Office.
*Carries out daily cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of the Health Office.
*Ensure that unit activities are carried out in accordance with safety standards.
*Conduct check-ins with staff to ensure that they are feeling well and ready to work.
*Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp including a daily cleanliness check of units and other areas throughout camp.
*Take appropriate action to ensure sanitary conditions.
*Verify with parent/legal guardian correct medications and dosage for all campers.
*Screen all campers who are arriving and departing camp for signs of illness or abuse.
*Conduct health assessments including lice and temperature check at check-in.
*Apply behavior management techniques alongside fellow counselors and leaders.
*Maintains appropriate communication with camper’s guardians either by phone or in person.
*Be familiar with the council emergency action plan and procedures.
*Maintain the cleanliness of all facilities; including but not limited to camp staff living areas, bathrooms, restocking of necessary supplies, garbage/recycling, and campfire areas.
*Ensure camper health needs are met. This includes and is not limited to knowledge of medication schedules, allergies, dietary restrictions, monitoring campers’ water intake and use of sunscreen.
Systems & Communications
*Communicate with Camp Director regarding emergency or major health concerns.
*Maintain accurate and detailed records of medical treatment according to camp procedures including but not limited to completing the health logs, transferring information from unit and program area logs and first aid kits to the general Camp Health log.
*Log medications given to campers and staff.
*Prepare, record and file incident and accident report forms promptly.
*Ensure safe and secure storage of all medications and health equipment.
*Conduct inventory of health and first aid supplies at the beginning and end of camp season.
*Order all medical supplies necessary to comply with standing medical orders and GSSNV procedures as needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
*Maintains appropriate communication with camper’s guardians either by phone, in person, or through written documents to inform camper’s families about any extended stays in the infirmary, or medical concerns that may require follow up, or higher medical care.
*Works with Camp Director to maintain a schedule for the health center, medication distribution.

*Maintain clear and positive verbal communication with all campers, co-workers, and parent/guardians.
*Honor diversity by ensuring that all materials, activities, and programs are reflective of the interests, values, and needs of all campers.
*Address conflicts between staff and/or campers.

*Positive approach to all Camp rules, policies, and procedures.
*Demonstrate maturity, sense of humor, integrity, and flexibility.

Request

-Minimum 21 years of age or older with High School Diploma or College Degree.
-Must be EMT or hold a current Registered Nurse license or current Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Nevada
-Current and valid First Aid and CPR Certification required.
-Must have or be willing to obtain Responding to Emergencies and CPR for the Professional Rescuer certifications or higher.
-Experience in first aid and emergency management.
-Experience in both child and adult illness/injury care.
-Experience in medication tracking and dispensing.
-Previous experience with overnight camp or working with children preferred.
-Cognitive and communicative ability to manage multiple complex tasks and follow instructions.
-Excellent communication skills. Ability to keep supervisor informed and aware of activities/problems with campers.
-Ability to interact with children of all age levels.
-Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities.
-Knowledge of Girl Scout program desired, but not required.
-Willing to accept the beliefs and principles of the Girl Scout Movement and accept the relevance and compelling benefits of Girl Scouting.
-Support all GSSNV policies and procedures.
-Must be willing to become a member of Girl Scouts.
