Position Summary

The Camp Coordinator leads the camp programs and staff during the summer months. This position will be responsible for managing the daily camp program schedules, staff assignments, and oversee the implementation of the program. The Y camp curriculum driven programs are designed to nurture personal growth and teach character values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Our signature Y programs promote self-confidence, sportsmanship, physical skills, and cultivate friendships that last a lifetime.

The incumbent must have previous supervisory experience with day camp programming and/or education in a related field is preferred; with the maturity and ability to be a great youth role model and possess a passion for camp!

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and healthy environment, both physically and mentally, to ensure the operation of a quality day camp program.
  • Assists with the daily supervision of camp program staff.
  • Ensures appropriate staff schedules meet camper to staff ratio requirements.
  • Must have willingness to care for children in all capacities.
  • Attend all staff meetings as required.
  • Assist in the planning and implementing of the daily camp curriculum that fit the children's needs and interests.
  • Take responsibility for the safety of the children in the camp environment and the quality of the supplies, equipment and materials in the day camp areas.
  • Make sure proper procedures are followed for sign-in/out of children on a daily basis.
  • Report all accidents to the Supervisor, and completely fill out proper health log and/or accident/incident forms.
  • Report all suspicions of child abuse to proper authorities.
  • Direct or assist in the daily maintenance of the camp areas, ensuring safety and cleanliness.
  • Assume equal share of the regular housekeeping chores such as cleaning, preparing for daily activities and cleaning up after projects.
  • Ensure that YMCA Character Traits are evident in all activities.
  • Assist in all phases of operation of the program.
  • Establish a relationship with each child and know his or her present level of understanding; consider the needs of all the children and treat each child with respect and dignity.
  • Work toward positive parent/staff relations.
  • Participate in member retention, special events and fundraising.
  • Complete all paperwork clearly and concisely.
  • Remain up to date on emergency procedures and Family Center policies.
  • Assure all programs are in compliance with all state and local requirements governing child care.
  • Promote and represent the mission and core values of the YMCA of Central Florida in the Family Center and its programs.
  • All other duties assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 18 years or older.
  • High school diploma or equivalent education required.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in related a camp / youth field; including at least one year of staff supervisory experience.
  • CPR/AED & First Aid Certified.
  • Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which may include weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Must be willing to work an on-call schedule rotation as required.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
  • The physical activities of this position include: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions. May be required to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. in various forms, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. The employee must be able to perform medium work.
  • May be required to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time.
  • Must exhibit patience and understanding. Receives and follows detailed instructions.
  • Must be alert at all times, keeping safety in mind.
  • Must possess acceptable hearing and visual capabilities in order to monitor environment and children's well-being. Talking is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, with or without correction
  • Must be capable of working under pressure in a somewhat disruptive environment.
