Job description

Role Summary:

The Café Assistant in Adult Day Services must have good communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability/desire to learn new skills. They must exhibit flexibility and a strong desire to provide person centered care with a non-institutional approach. They will follow all state and federal guidelines for food service.

Essential Accountabilities:

1. Facilitate a person centered and non-institutional approach to participant dining.

Performance Criteria:

  • Support therapeutic activities that take place in the kitchen and dining areas to include, baking groups, cooking groups, and assisting participants with participation in cooking and cleaning activities as specified.
  • Support nutritional aspects necessary to execute successful theme and special event days.
  • Maintain a dining environment that is inviting, inclusive and appropriately stimulating, to include: proper dining music, a clean environment, and organization of café area.

2. Ensure compliance with State and Federal Guidelines for Food Service.

Performance Criteria:

  • Support Nutrition Coordinator overseeing the organization and cleanliness of the kitchen, inside and outside dining area, appliances, and nutrition related supply storage. See daily accountabilities.

3. Ensure that participant’s dietary needs are met.

Performance Criteria:

  • At the direction of the Nutrition Coordinator, follow special dietary needs, including both physician directed diets and diets to maintain independence.
  • Assist in the serving of all meals.

Daily Accountabilities:

Breakfast:

Record refrigerator and freezer temperatures on the appropriate logs.

Unstack the café chairs and place around the tables.

Prepare the café for breakfast, setting up the drink station with coffee, juices, water, milk.

Assist in preparing breakfast.

Check the laundry and assist a participant in folding any items found.

Assist in serving breakfast.

After breakfast is complete, wipe down and sanitize tables, chairs (arms/backs/seat), and the drink station.

Clear the floor of any items left after breakfast by sweeping and spot mopping if necessary.

Sanitize the hand washing sink.

Scrape, rinse, and sanitize all dishes.

10:30a participant water break.

Clean and sanitize the kitchen counters.

Clean and sanitize the stove.

Clean and sanitize the dish return counter.

Once dry, put the dishes away.

Lunch:

Prepare the café for lunch, setting up the drink stations with coffee, milk, tea, lemonade, flavored water, water, and ice.

Put a place setting at each seat (silverware/napkin)

Make sure aprons are readily available should a participant need/want one.

Assist in preparing lunch, helping prep special diets.

Temp all food and record the temperatures on the appropriate logs.

Assist in serving lunch.

After lunch is complete, wipe down and sanitize tables, chairs (arms/backs/seat), and the drink station.

Clear the floor of any items left after lunch by sweeping and spot mopping if necessary.

Scrape, rinse, and sanitize all dishes.

Sanitize the steam table and serving area.

Clean and sanitize the kitchen counters.

Clean and sanitize the stove.

Clean and sanitize the dish return counter.

Once dry, put the dishes away.

Snack:

2:00p participant water break.

Assist in preparing the snack, helping prep special diets.

Assist in serving the snack.

Scrape, rinse, and sanitize the dishes.

Clean and sanitize the kitchen counters.

Clean and sanitize the stove.

Clean and sanitize the dish return counter.

Clean and sanitize the prep table and carts used.

Once dry, put the dishes away.

After the snack is complete, wipe down and sanitize tables, chairs (arms/backs/seat), and the drink station.

Clear the floor of any items left after snack by sweeping and spot mopping if necessary.

Stack the café chairs.

Drain and clean the trap of the dishwasher/sanitizer.

Clean and sanitize the outside of the dishwasher/sanitizer.

Clean and sanitize the hand sink.

Clean and sanitize the kitchen sink.

Clean and prepare the coffee makers and water kettle for the next day.

Clean the coffee urns.

Clean and sanitize high touch surfaces and handles (refrigerators, freezers, cabinets).

Clean and sanitize the microwave inside and out.

Wipe down the walls behind all trash cans.

Start laundry before leaving.

Weekly Accountabilities:

Run the coffee urns through the dishwasher/sanitizer.

Drain and sanitize the steam table.

Dispose of outdated foods/drinks from the refrigerator.

Clean and sanitize inside and outside of refrigerators.

Sweep the patio area.

Assist with ordering and picking up orders.

Clean, sanitize, and organize the pantry shelves.

Roll up the kitchen mats and serving area mats.

Monthly Accountabilities:

Deep clean all kitchen areas, to include chairs, steam table, serving areas, counters, floors.

Clean and organize drink station cabinets.

Deep clean all pitchers, mugs, and glasses.

The following accountabilities may be reassigned:

1. Completes other duties to support departmental operations as assigned or requested.

The Café Assistant is expected to exhibit a positive, supportive and person-centered approach with a good attitude in all aspects of the job. They must also have good communication skills, exhibit flexibility, patience and the ability/desire to learn new skills. They will feel confident and positive about being in an environment with impaired adults. They must also have the ability to handle potentially crisis/emergency situations appropriately and effectively. They will be flexible and adaptable to necessary staffing situations at the center as needed and will assist in maintaining the appropriate participant to staff ratios. They will participate in the team process as an active team member and will direct issues or concerns about the program directly to their supervisor. They must also maximize productivity while maintaining high quality.
They must participate in all special event days including but not limited to following designated dress code for special events.
