BUSINESS OFFICE CLERK
POSITION SUMMARY:
Submits accurate insurance claims and performs timely follow up on unpaid claims to secure prompt and accurate payment for Cherokee Regional Medical Center. Answer patient questions regarding their insurance coverage and payment when needed. Prompt follow up on any claim denials to assure meeting timelines for filing appeals for payment. Assist in Central Registration as needed.
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday 8am to 4:30pm, No holidays, or weekends.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Preferred: Medical training/education in coding, billing or front office processes.

License/Registration/Certification:
  • None Required

Experience:
  • Required: Clerical experience
  • Preferred: Previous experience in medical billing, coding or front office

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Knowledge of or the ability to learn healthcare policies and procedures
  • Skill in typing and data entry with minimal errors
  • Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
  • Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively
  • Skill in using mathematics to solve problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form
  • Ability to work collaboratively and build strategic relations with colleagues and coworkers
  • Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure
  • Ability to operate office machines including adding machines, calculator and personal computer with a general understanding of application software and an understanding of the Internet.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Identifies insurance claims with errors and initiates correction of the errors
  • Evaluates unpaid insurance claims and initiates follow up of those outstanding claims
  • Resolves accounts out of balance
  • Assists patients with questions on their accounts
  • Research accounts thoroughly before refunding payments to insurance or patients
  • Organizes work so as to meet timely filing guidelines with insurances and insurance appeal timelines
  • Assists in identifying registration, coding or billing issues that occur repeatedly to help improve processes and payment timelines
