Departmental Overview
In the Division of Student Affairs and under the Residential Student Services Programs portfolio, Berkeley Dining is a self-operated dining program focused on culinary excellence, social responsibility and supporting the living/learning environment of our customers. With more than 12,000 meal plan holders, Berkeley Dining serves over 5 million meals per year in 14 facilities with a combination of residential "all you care to eat" dining, retail "a la carte" dining, training, early childhood education meal production, and catering. Berkeley Dining services the campus seven days per week, seventeen hours per day employing 450 full and part time staff and approximately 400 Cal student workers across multiple locations.

Responsibilities
Process Improvement:

  • Proactively identify areas within the organization where processes can be streamlined or optimized.
  • Analyze current workflows, systems, and procedures to pinpoint bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
  • Develop and implement data-driven process improvement strategies to enhance productivity and reduce operational costs.
  • Collaborate with cross-organizational departments or external entities to ensure successful implementation of process improvements.
  • Conduct post-implementation analysis to determine the need for further enhancements, finer distinctions, and/or additional process/policy components.
Strategic Planning:
  • Conduct in-depth business data analysis and trends to support long-term strategic planning.
  • Work closely with senior management to define organizational goals and objectives.
  • Assist in creating strategic plans, including resource allocation and performance metrics.
  • Develop quantitative models and scenarios to evaluate strategic options and provide recommendations for decision-making.
  • Develop the scope of work, budgets, timelines, and reports for project requirements.
  • Identify the goals and resource requirements of each project.
Data Analysis and Modeling:
  • Collect, clean, and analyze large datasets to extract meaningful insights.
  • Utilize operations research techniques, statistical analysis, and modeling tools to solve complex business problems, working directly with the Directors, General Managers, and Administrative Team in Berkeley Dining.
  • Develop and maintain statistical models and simulations to aid in decision-making processes.
  • Perform ad hoc analytical studies on a wide variety of policies, programs, and issues which are complex in nature.
Reporting and Communication:
  • Research, monitor, and analyze regulations, legislation, research literature, and UC policies for impact on the organization or initiative for IT projects, remodeling projects, dining operations, management projects, system implementation, or new projects arising from expansion.
  • Stay updated on industry best practices, emerging technologies, and policy changes related to business operations. Summarize findings for distribution to the management team.
  • Create clear and concise reports, dashboards, and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with teams to ensure data-driven insights are integrated into decision-making processes.
  • Provide technical guidance and quality assessment.
  • Establish and maintain contacts internally and with external constituents for the collection and exchange of data.
  • Track, forecast, and report on project progress, including metrics and challenges related to the ongoing initiatives within the Dining department.
  • Maintain professional discretion and confidentiality as needed.15%EssentialProfessional development and other duties as assigned.
  • This position is a member of the RSSP Analyst Team and may be required to support divisional objectives in addition to Dining-specific projects.
  • May attend business meetings and conferences with external organizations (e.g. NACUFS).

Required Qualifications
  • Proficiency in common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs such as Google Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing and convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines.
  • Analytical / problem-solving skills.
  • Exceptional research and reporting skills.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching, and synthesizing large and complex data sets for preparing sound and relevant proposals / analyses.
  • Knowledge of optimization techniques, statistical analysis, and modeling methodologies.
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding time frames.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong policy analysis techniques.
Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Data Analysis, Public Administration, Management, Business Law, Contract law, Economics, Statistical Analysis or related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5 Years of project planning experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in food service.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB.
  • Experience with data visualization tools and business intelligence platforms, such as Tableau.
Education/Training:
  • Master's degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Project management certification (PMP).

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $70,100.00 - $97,400.00.
  • This is a 100%, full-time (40 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is exempt and paid monthly.
