JOB DESCRIPTION
Bus Monitor-Headstart 


INFORMATION

Department: Head Start                                        

Type of Position: Non-Exempt

Location of Work: Saxman

Salary Grade(s): 4

Hours of Work: To be determined by Supervisor

Employment Category:  Casual 


 

PURPOSE

This position is responsible for assisting the Bus Driver in providing safe transportation for Head Start children to and from Head Start and any scheduled activities they may have.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

 

Reports To: Lead Teacher

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Report to work at scheduled time, work schedule will be determined by Lead Teacher. Maintain good attendance.  Perform all duties in a safe, timely, and professional manner.  Participate with a positive attitude and behavior in all program activities.
  • Continue professional growth by participating in ongoing Early Childhood Education, training programs, and workshops/conferences, and an annual pre-service, as budget allows.
  • Assists the Bus Driver in completing and submitting all required reports (e.g., daily pre-trip reports, child bus attendance records, accident reports).
  • Is familiar with building and bus safety and emergency evacuations; ensuring all staff, volunteers are familiar with the evacuation plan and making sure all adults are familiar with the use and maintenance of the fire extinguishers.
  • Must make sure that all children are in safety restraints while performing bus monitor duties.
  • Check message board for any route changes.
  • Responsible for obtaining a parent volunteer substitute bus monitor in case of absence.
  • Notifies the Bus Driver or Lead Teacher of any suspected child abuse while picking up the children.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and reasonable within the scope of duties listed above.

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and requirements,
  • Working knowledge of Head Start performance standards and requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively with executives, directors/managers, supervisors, employees and employee representatives.
  • Ability to maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records.
  • Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • Proficiency in computerized record keeping and reporting.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of family dynamics, adult learning, and community resources.
  • Knowledge of child development concepts and skilled at putting them into practice.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License,

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

  • High school diploma
  • One (1) year experience working directly with young children in a preschool classroom.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s license, and have reliable personal transportation

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (education, experience, skills)

  • Current 1st Aide/CPR certificate (Must attain within 90 days).

 

UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR RESTRICTIONS

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, stoop, bend; walk; talk; hear; use hands to grip, type; reach with hands and arms, occasionally required to stand, or walk on uneven surfaces; climb stairs, run.  1 to 2 hours per day spent in strenuous physical activity, lifting to 50# two or three times in a day.  Travel on small aircraft or ferry may be required.

  • CCTHITA is a no tolerance workplace. All regular employees must pass an initial and random drug and alcohol screening to be eligible for and maintain employment.
  • CCTHITA requires a criminal background check for the safety of our clients. All employment are conditional until CCTHITA has received a Federal criminal background check verifying eligibility to work. Must maintain current First Aid/CPR certifications
  • Must complete annual TB screens and bi-annual physicals
