Job Description
The van/Bus Driver is responsible for transporting children. The van/Bus Driver reports to the Center Director.
QUALIFICATIONSA high school diploma, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and experience driving a 15-passenger van are required. Experience in the group care of young children, transporting young children, and driving at least a 24-passenger commercial vehicle is preferred.
Van/Bus Drivers must be able to lift 40 pounds continuously without limitations and perform necessary cleaning in accordance with local, state, and national accreditation, health and safety standards. The van/Bus Driver must be able to pass a state criminal check, obtain a TB test and medical examination.
NATURE AND SCOPEThe van/Bus Driver assists in all aspects of the program pertaining to transportation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following general areas:
General Management/Professional Development
- Comply with and implement those aspects of the state minimum standards for licensed childcare centers and national accreditation standards, which apply to the position.
- Comply with and implement center and agency policies and procedures.
- Maintain accurate activity logs and van/bus maintenance logs as required.
- Provide reports, trip data, gas receipts, etc. as required.
- Assume responsibility with minimal supervision; reliable; flexible; has a positive, supportive attitude toward both children and adults.
- Follow prescribed routes for pick-up and delivery of passengers.
- Must maintain communications with center staff, parents and supervisory personnel.
- Carry out the daily transportation activities in a safe, healthy, and developmentally appropriate manner.
- Understand and adhere to safe vehicles operation, traffic rules and laws, and good driver practices in the performance of assigned tasks.
- Assume responsibility for a group of children, if requested.
- Assist with developing and encouraging positive relationships among staff in order to create a team environment.
- Cooperate with all center and agency staff, sharing talents, ideas and time as appropriate.
- Perform daily maintenance checks and safety equipment inspection of assigned vehicles to ascertain that a properly operating and safe condition vehicle exists to carry out duties.
- Monitor maintenance and repairs of the van/bus, and reporting problems and needs to the appropriate staff.
- Maintain a clean vehicle by weekly cleaning of interior and exterior surfaces including windshield, mirrors, lights, and floors. Encourage passengers/children to share in the responsibility of keeping the van/bus clean.
- Provide a positive and supportive relationship to parents as partners in early childhood education.
- Maintain communication with the center director regarding any parent concerns.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the center director, or other supervisors.
