Through the years, the network has grown to five schools, with a sixth opening in 2024, across three districts.
Job Description:
A Building Engineer at James Irwin Charter Schools is a critical member of our team, responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and functional operation of our school facilities. This role encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities, from maintaining HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to overseeing fire and life safety measures. The Building Engineer also manages the building automation systems (BAS) as well as some grounds maintenance functions as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
1. HVAC Systems Maintenance & Repair:
  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and boiler systems.
  • Troubleshoot HVAC equipment malfunctions and coordinate with Director of Facilities and contractors for complex repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of HVAC system maintenance and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.

2. Electrical Systems Maintenance & Repair:
  • Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical systems, including lighting, outlets, and building circuitry.
  • Identify electrical issues and coordinate with electricians for extensive repairs.
  • Ensure that all electrical systems are up to code and safe for use.

3. Plumbing Systems Maintenance & Repair:
  • Conduct regular maintenance and inspections of plumbing systems, fixtures, and drains.
  • Respond to plumbing emergencies promptly.
  • Monitor water quality and ensure compliance with sanitation standards.

4. Building Automation Systems Management:
  • Manage and maintain building automation systems (BAS) to optimize energy efficiency and comfort.
  • Program and troubleshoot BAS software.
  • Collaborate with external vendors for system upgrades and repairs.

5. Fire & Life Safety Systems Management:
  • Inspect and maintain fire detection and suppression systems.
  • Conduct fire drills and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with local authorities for fire safety inspections.
  • Stay updated on local and state fire codes relevant to school facilities.
  • Train staff on fire safety procedures as it relates to fire safety equipment.

6. Grounds Maintenance:
  • Oversee grounds maintenance, including landscaping, irrigation, and sprinkler systems.
  • Coordinate snow removal operations during winter months.
  • Maintain the safety and appearance of school grounds.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in Building Maintenance.
  • Proficiency in HVAC, electrical, and plumbing maintenance and able to perform or learn responsibilities listed above.
  • Knowledge of BAS software and fire/life safety systems.
  • Familiarity with fire codes and regulations specific to school buildings.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Valid Colorado driver's license. A commercial driver's license is preferred, but not required.
  • An operational understanding of basic computer skills such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to pass a Colorado Bureau of Investigations background check.
