Job description

Technical responsibility for performing building inspections to enforce compliance with all building, mechanical, electrical or plumbing municipal codes and regulations. Work is performed under the general direction of the Building Official.

  • Inspects new and existing buildings for compliance with existing codes; explains applicable laws, ordinances and codes to contractors, property owners and the public.
  • Reviews plans submitted by building contractors, developers and property owners to ensure compliance with all related building and zoning codes.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of the review, permit approval and inspection process;
  • Investigates complaints of alleged unsafe building conditions and processes cases strictly in conformance with city policies and procedures.
  • Recommends changes to existing inspection methods and amendments to current safety standards and codes to improve efficiency and update regulatory requirements.
  • High School diploma or equivalent plus completion of an approved apprenticeship program for the specific building system to be inspected.
  • Seven to ten years of experience in either building construction, plumbing, electrical or mechanical systems installation.


NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's or journeyman license in specific systems to be inspected.
  • International Mechanical Code certifications within six months of hire.
  • Gas Fitters and Medical Gas License within one year of hire.
  • IAMPO inspector certification within one year of hire.
  • Candidate must possess of have the ability to obtain a valid Montana driver's license.
  • Extensive knowledge of the design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of either building construction, plumbing, and mechanical principles, practices and systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal and nationally recognized codes, standards and regulations governing either building construction, plumbing, and mechanical installation and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles and techniques of modern building construction;
  • Thorough knowledge of construction materials and their correct installation methods;
  • Thorough knowledge of basic math principles;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required certifications;
  • Ability to deal with a wide range of persons, including situations in which individuals may be upset over some issue involved with City activities and policies;
  • Ability to instruct project owners, designers, and contractors in methods they need to employ to meet code requirements;
  • Ability to plan and manage area of responsibility to aid the public in the efficient compliance of the adopted municipal and construction codes to avoid time delays and associated costs;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate, or quickly learn to operate, a personal computer or other devices using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, contractors and the general public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not supervise staff.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a variety of environments including tight spaces, on roof tops, outdoors, noisy, dusty, damp, and on ladders.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, crawl, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. Must have the ability to perform moderate physical work and to lift and carry up to 50 pounds at a time; the possession of hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate inspection tools, personal computer, office equipment and a motor vehicle; the ability to talkand hear in person or by telephone; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.


EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work schedule is a 40-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. This position is a non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.


TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
