Building Inspector 1

The Building Inspector 1 is in the Metro Department of Codes and Building Safety and is responsible for reviewing approved plans and inspecting construction of new and existing buildings and dwellings to ensure compliance with Metro Building Codes and other regulatory requirements.

During the 2021 fiscal year, Codes issued and tracked $5.3 billion in building permits, more than any previous year. The department concerns itself with the safety of the public as occupants in homes and buildings throughout the county, and also promotes beautiful neighborhoods through the enforcement of local codes and zoning regulations. Codes is an exciting place to work during this period of growth and construction.

• Prepare for, conduct, and follow-up on inspections of new buildings and dwellings.
• Review approved plans and specifications for compliance with regulatory codes.
• Meet with contractors, architects, engineers, and homeowners on matters relating to code regulations.
• Inspect structures during construction to ensure that procedures and materials meet approved standards.
• Follow-up with re-inspections to verify compliance with regulations and approved plans.
• Take corrective actions against code violators--patrol and inspect for work being done without permits.
• Maintain accurate records and files for preparing daily inspection field reports.
• Attend various meetings and training sessions and stay current with technical publications.
• Use a computer to input and retrieve information.

High School Diploma and 5 years of construction inspection or related experience.*Additional education may be considered for some experience.

REQUIRED LICENSE:
Valid Driver License
State of Tennessee Building Inspector's Certificate
*The Certified Residential Building Inspector (ICC) or Certified Commercial Building Inspector (ICC) certification must be obtained within 1 year from the effective date of hiring appointment:
*Failure to meet the certification requirements within the 1 year period shall result in automatic terminations/dismissal.
Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

• Knowledge of codes, laws, and ordinances relating to the construction of various structures
• Knowledge of the materials, methods, and practices used in construction
• Knowledge of OSHA laws
• Knowledge of the International Building Codes, International Residential and other applicable codes
• Strong communication skills
