Purpose of Position

Are you a numbers enthusiast? Ready to apply your skills to a dynamic team specializing in financial analysis and budget management? We’re looking for a Budget Analyst (BA) to join our dynamic team at the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC)!

Join the EERC, an international leader in energy and environmental research and a nonprofit branch of the University of North Dakota (UND), which gives our employees access to unbeatable benefits and tuition waivers. Learn more about the EERC at undeerc.org.

Be a part of cutting-edge research, engage with professionals who share your passion, and create work you can be proud of. As a BA, you will contribute to the success of the organization by performing one or more of the following:

  • Assist in preparing budgets according to guidelines of the sponsoring agency’s request for proposal (RFP). Inform principal investigator (PI) of required financial information. Determine the budget display and budget template to meet RFP, sponsoring agency, and cost-share requirements to appropriately budget the scope of work.
  • Assist in preparation of an accurate representation of budgets in accordance with official sponsor requests for proposals and EERC and university guidelines, ensuring that the budget includes appropriate categories and budgeted dollars. Work with BA team to complete budget documentation accurately and with appropriate documentation for subcontractors, consultants, equipment, etc.
  • Review proposals’ text to ensure that costs are budgeted as mentioned in the text, milestones match the period of performance, and the cost section is clear and understandable to the sponsoring agency.
  • Input proposal budget information to RMS projections and update as appropriate until the project is awarded, rejected, or withdrawn.
  • Assist the BA team in post-award budget needs to meet deadlines.
  • Accurately review/adjust the setup of funded and working budgets in RMS to reflect the status of the award and to maintain the appropriate personnel projections for EERC staff.
  • Work directly with PIs, advising them with suggested changes to working budgets. Review fund statuses on a daily/weekly basis to ensure that the budgets do not overdraw and journal entries are kept to a minimum. This includes reviewing and adjusting line items to properly reflect line-item availability, reviewing end dates, etc.
  • Use the tools of RMS and finance to review payroll, daily vouchers, journals, travel documents, etc. to ensure allowability, correct fund usage, and availability of funds. Work with PIs and other groups, including Accounting, Human Resources, Contracts, and Purchasing, to resolve problems.
  • Work with PIs as requested to answer financial questions and provide nonstandard reports on the financial progress of a project.
  • Manage workload and assignments and effectively communicate with supervisor on activities and work-related problems.
  • Take initiative to help others in the group during times of heavy workloads, vacations, and sick leave.
  • Bring forth new ideas and/or procedure changes to make the position or group more efficient. Share new things learned that would help others in the group.
  • Maintain the EERC’s opportunities report with up-to-date and accurate information.
  • Demonstrate professional, service-oriented, and constructive interactions, written and verbal, with EERC staff and sponsoring agencies.

The EERC is recognized as a global leader in developing clean, efficient energy solutions. With a dedicated team of over 270, we collaboratively develop innovative technologies to power the world efficiently while safeguarding our air, water, and soil.
