The School of the Performing Arts is the education wing of the organization, offering a robust series of training programs, classes and engagement programs in each venue, in schools and throughout the community.
The Collaborative School of the Arts is seeking an experienced, creative Set Designer for the Broadway Camp summer program.
The Broadway Camp will be performed with a student orchestra, cast and crew of over 40 high school students of diverse backgounds from throughout the Capital Region. Previous shows have been ALL SHOOK UP , PIPPIN,AIDA, LES MISERABLES, RENT, INTO THE WOODS, THE PROM.Broadway Camp is a pre-professional training program which ends with a full production performed on Proctors Mainstage. The company is made up of students in acting, production and orchestra from July 1 st to July 26 th , Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm, plus show calls Friday and Saturday. All students are between the ages of 14-19 and bring with them varied life experiences that require openness to inclusion. All creative and production staff share the responsibility of working with students, providing training in their area of expertise as they work collaboratively on the show.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for designing the sets for theatre production. Collaborates with director and interprets scrip to visualize set. Works with set builders to bring vision to life on stage.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
BA in Theatre Scenic Design or equivalent professional experience.
Experience with large full-scale musicals
Read scripts to get an idea of what set will entail
Create scenic design - Concept, create, and craft sets for theatrical productions.
Sketch out set plans, using hand-rendering or computer software
Generate CAD or equivalent scale drawings of set design.
Provide scenic shop with entire show CAD set drawings for construction.
Oversee building of set, with shop check-ins as needed.
Select the furniture,and large props to be used in set.
Produce scale set sketches for director to approve.
Adapt and make changes as necessary.
CONTRACT PERIOD:
This position starts part-time, remote work January through May for monthly zoom meetings and shop check in after build starts.
Must be available as needed from July 8 through July 12 during load in for questions and occasional check in.
