02/10/2024PURPOSE: To coach, direct, advise, and coordinate those functions inherent to a specific interscholastic sport, extracurricular activity, or co-curricular activity.
FUNCTION:
  1. Follows all laws, Board Policies, regulations, rules and procedures, and complies with the instructions and/or directives from his/her supervisor(s).
  2. Works primarily independently in assigned settings.
  3. Maintains appropriate, effective means of cooperation and communication with the building principal or designee, school district administration, the School Board, the Director of Athletics and Activities (DAA), other PVSD Department of Athletics and Activities personnel, and other school personnel who come into contact with the program, including instructional staff, maintenance, custodial, grounds and police/security.
  4. Effectively communicates with other staff and the community and serves as a positive school district representative when communicating with the internal and external publics.
  5. Develops a positive rapport with the coaching/directing/advising staff and student-participants.
  6. Uses ethical means to motivate staff and student-participants towards desired goals.
  7. Maintains appropriate, professional relations with all game/event officials, student-participants, bus drivers, parents/guardians, opponents, spectators, and the news media.
  8. Comports himself/herself in manner in which self-control and poise are evident and sets a positive example and develops an atmosphere of respect, while serving as a role model for students and staff.
  9. Demonstrates an understanding of the principles regarding the training, conditioning and development of student-participants for a particular sport/activity; adjusts activities to suit the skill level(s) of the student-participant(s); and teaches basic skills/fundamentals and good citizenship/sportsmanship.
  10. Complies with all Pre-Season Checklist requirements (i.e., practice schedule, PIAA Physical/Parent Certificate, Insurance Coverage Form, team rules, team roster, PIAA Eligibility Lists); submits accurate post-season forms, including final reports, award winners, coach/director/ advisor evaluations, time sheets, and student-participant obligations; adheres to PIAA, school district, league, District XI, and other governing body rules, regulations, and policies governing the school, sport and/or activity; and attends all mandatory school district, league, District XI, and other governing body meetings.
  11. Attends appropriate meetings, assembly programs, pep rallies, recognition events, banquets, etc.
  12. Performs all pertinent and necessary evaluations, including the evaluation of the performance of the team/activity and the student-participants involved as well as formal and informal evaluations of assistant coaches/directors/ advisors.
  13. Seeks self-improvement and improvement of staff/program by attending/arranging clinics, conferences, and other professional development activities.
  14. Effectively organizes the program, including the organization of coaching/directing/advising staff; pre-season, in-season, and/or post-season student/parent activities, including meeting(s) to inform them of philosophy and expectations, rules and regulations; practice/rehearsal sessions; and (as is applicable) the junior high, freshman, JV and Varsity or high school levels; and (as is applicable) providing leadership to youth sports/activity organization programs and/or coaches/ directors/advisors to aid in the development of future PVSD program participants.
  15. Plans assignments and gives clear directions to assistants and student-participants and effectively delegates authority with responsibility, but remains accountable for such delegation.
  16. Works cooperatively with students, parents/guardians, the guidance department, and college representatives to assist student-participants in working toward their post-high school goals and assists student-participants with college selections and scholarship availability as is applicable, adhering to all pertinent NCAA and other governing body policies, rules and regulations.
  17. Ensures that student-participants are aware of school district policies regulating practices and modes of behavior during and after school.
  18. Communicates the importance of and teaches and demands safety, ensuring a safe environment to help ensure injury prevention, handles injuries in a proper manner, provides for the proper care of injuries, and completes applicable paperwork inherent to such.
  19. Submits reasonable equipment requests in accordance with required timelines, follows all school district purchasing procedures, oversees fundraising activities to benefit the program, and follows all school district policies and procedures.
  20. Always demands and ensures proper use, care, and storage of equipment.
  21. Maintains an effective system for issuing, collecting, and maintaining supplies and equipment, properly submitting an inventory of equipment, uniforms, etc. at the appointed time, including an itemized list of lost equipment, uniforms, etc.
  22. Ensures proper use of facilities and, as is applicable, ensures that facilities are secured following usage.
  23. Ensures proper supervision of student-participants before, during, and after practices and/or games/events, including playing/performing areas, locker areas, other facilities and team/activity buses as is applicable.
  24. Submits all required reports and information to the Athletics and Activities Department.
  25. Ensures that all policies and procedures are properly followed with regard to volunteer coaches/directors/advisors.
  26. Works the hours necessary to ensure the functions of the position are effectively administered.
  27. Performs work described herein without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of himself/herself or others.
  28. Performs other related duties and tasks as assigned by the Superintendent and/or designee.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  2. Must possess and display the ability to give and follow directives and adhere to the established chain of command.
  3. Has a proven ability to work with others (i.e., coaches/directors/advisors, student-participants, administration and staff, parents/guardians, media, etc.) and to organize and administer a program for applicable grade level(s) (e.g., K-3; K-6; 4-6; 7&8, 7-12; 9-12; K-12).
  4. Displays the enthusiasm, sincerity, and the ability to keep the concept of running a successful program in its proper perspective, as well as the knowledge of and ability to teach and show good citizenship/sportsmanship.
  5. Must possess the ability to make good decisions appropriate to circumstances.
  6. Must be dependable, punctual, flexible, appropriately attired, neat in appearance, and able to manage time appropriately.
  7. Must maintain a professional demeanor and image.
  8. Must be courteous to students, staff, and the general public.
  9. Must possess and display effective communication, judgmental, planning, organizational, problem-solving, and human relations skills.
  10. Possesses strong interpersonal skills, demonstrating the ability to work independently and/or on a team, as well as large and small groups of people.
  11. Possesses a thorough knowledge of the skills, techniques, procedures, and rules of the specific sport or activity, and the ability to demonstrate such.
  12. Knowledge of basic first aid and CPR is preferred.
  13. Must possess adequate knowledge with regard to applicable technology resources and individual computer/technology-related skills.
  14. Provides evidence of professional growth and development by keeping current of issues in the field.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  1. Must have the ability to be on one's feet for prolonged periods of time and the ability and stamina to walk as necessary.
  2. Must have the ability to bend, stoop, or reach above shoulder level.
  3. Must possess the ability to climb stairs and ramps.
  4. Must be able to access all work areas and locations and move about the area to perform necessary functions.
  5. Must be able to lift as required.
  6. Must be able to withstand changes in environmental conditions in the work area and to adapt to these changes.
  7. Must be able to travel between school district buildings and other job-related locations as necessary.
  8. Must be able to operate and maintain equipment relative to his/her position.
