Job Type: Part Time

Compensation: Hourly Wage and Tips depending on shift type

Bottle Shop Service: $12/hr + tips

Brunch Service: $10/hr + tips

Schedule: Weekdays + Sat/Sun

Business Overview:

Sojourn Philly is a hospitality group of four restaurants: Jet Wine Bar, Rex at The Royal, Café Ynez, and Sor Ynez.  Sojourn Philly has been operating restaurants in Philly since 2010.  Our mission is to create welcoming environments that serve delicious food and drink, while being a caring and responsible neighborhood Partner.

Position Overview:

The Bottle Shop & Barista position performs the daily functions of the weekday Bottle Shop–sales, stocking, and station maintenance–while providing cafe service for dine-in and carry-out guests–including making and serving specialty cafe and basic bar beverages. During Brunch Service shifts, the position is part of the support team, with their primary station being at the cafe producing cafe beverages for dine-in service while performing other support duties such as polishing, food running, stocking, and bussing in collaboration with the dining room and bar staff. Upon hiring or assignment to the position by Leadership, candidates will begin the Bottle Shop & Barista Program.

Program Overview:

The Bottle Shop & Barista Program is a training course designed to prepare the candidate for their position by establishing proficiency in the execution of cafe service beverages, daily Bottle Shop operations, and brunch service support duties.

The program consists of onboarding with HR, followed by a training curriculum covering the following topics: brand experience and hospitality philosophy, preparation of espresso and cafe beverages, espresso machine/equipment maintenance, basic bar beverage preparation, stocking and maintaining Bottle Shop/retail, wine/beer knowledge and sales techniques, cash handling, brunch food and beverage menus, and brunch support duties. The curriculum will be primarily executed by the Bottle Shop Manager, who will also evaluate the successful completion of the program.

Although staff in the Bottle Shop & Barista position are not expected to arrive with robust knowledge in wine and beer, it is expected that developing familiarity with stocked products will be an ongoing learning objective in order to take a more active role in Bottle Shop sales. Further commitment to growing knowledge of wine and beer beyond the required familiarity may provide additional opportunities for interested staff in the Bottle Shop & Barista position to more actively participate in the bottle sales program within both the retail and beverage programs.

Compensation:

The Bottle Shop & Barista position is staffed for shifts that differ in style of service, and therefore in average tips earned. To account for this, the position has two different hourly rates for Bottle Shop and Brunch Service shifts, reflecting the relationship between performed labor and earned tips.

The Bottle Shop & Barista position earns  a pay rate of $12/hr plus tips for Bottle Shop Service shifts, and a pay rate of $10/hr plus tips from the Weighted Tip Pool at a position code equivalent to that of the Support positions.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operating Bottle Shop and retail sales
  • Properly crafting espresso and specialty cafe drinks, as well as basic bar drinks using house recipes
  • Providing cafe service to dine-in and carry-out guests according to relevant steps of service
  • Maintaining proper stocking, organization and cleanliness of all areas and equipment in the Bottle Shop and cafe areas
  • Setting up the Bottle Shop and cafe prior to service and either closing or transitioning the set up to requirements for the next shift
  • Executing service tickets for cafe drinks at brunch
  • Performing support duties such as running food, polishing dishes, and bussing tables
  • Properly handling cash and credit card transactions using the POS register and preparing end of shift reports
  • Completing assigned side work tasks

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Basic knowledge of beer and wine, and interest in developing the knowledge further
  • Basic knowledge of espresso and cafe beverages
  • Previous experience in support staff, barista and/or cashier positions
  • Knowledge of restaurant operations and service standards
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to perform assigned tasks independently
  • Ability to function as part of a team with an understanding of common goals

Coordination with FOH Team:

The Bottle Shop & Barista position will work very closely with the Bottle Shop Manager, who provides direct supervision, assigns tasks, and manages total labor flow during Bottle Shop and Brunch Service shifts. During Brunch Service, they collaborate with the other support positions to perform shared duties. The Beverage Manager is available to provide additional learning goals and development opportunities for staff in the Bottle Shop & Barista position interested in growing their participation in the bottle sales program within the retail and beverage programs.
