The Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals & Licensing (DIAL) is seeking a highly motivated, skilled, solution-oriented, and detailed individual to join our team as a Boiler Inspector within the Building and Construction Division.

To accomplish our Mission, the individual(s) selected for this position will perform technical work in the inspection of boilers and unfired pressure vessels throughout the state to ensure compliance with state safety laws and regulations.
What You'll Do
Perform safety inspections on all known and registered boilers (high and low pressure), pressure vessels, their required and/or additionally installed safety controls, the equipment rooms, related systems, and maintenance and/or chemical treatment logs to ensure their compliance with Iowa Code and Administrative Rules (chapters 89-96), The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code), National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and the International Mechanical Code (IMC). Inspection of new boilers and pressure vessels or replacement equipment. This task involves checking for such requirements as: proper material strength and specifications, proper use and installation of safety devices, and review of welding of piping and internal and external construction.
Perform all scheduling activities ensuring that you are scheduled at a minimum of three weeks in
advance. These activities will include but are not limited to the following:
Identifying and schedule all locations and objects that require inspection
Determining the most efficient travel route to accommodate the scheduled inspections
Downloading the objects in the State's data base for inspection
Generate and edit the inspection schedule letters for all of the locations and objects that are to be inspected
Make follow-up phone calls and/or emails with the contacts of the locations that are scheduled for inspection to ensure the location is aware of the upcoming inspection
Set-up all necessary hotel and travel accommodations for your trip
Email all inspection schedule letters to the office for mailing
Generate weekly inspection schedule and communicate it with the office
Perform consultations visits at the request of the Owner/Users, Installation contractors, or other related entities to assist them in understanding the requirements of Iowa code and Administrative rules. Perform investigations of boiler and pressure vessel explosions and accidents. Review the inspections conducted by Special Inspectors from the different insurance companies operating in the State of Iowa. Witnessing of any required or requested hydrostatic, pneumatic, nondestructive testing, or the review of any welding, or inspection procedures will be performed and documented as required. Perform an exit review of the inspection with the locations contact person. This exit review shall cover the findings of all inspections performed.
National Board In-Service Commission (IS) required.
Necessary Special Requirements
All appointees to this classification must successfully complete registration as a National Board Commission member with the National Boiler Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors within one (1) year of hire.
NOTE: Extensive travel is required. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.

Graduation from high school or G.E.D. and five years of experience in the construction, installation, repair, or inspection of boilers or allied gauges, pumps, radiators equipment, or in the capacity of power plant engineer, or steam operating engineer, or boiler maker or Boiler Inspector;
OR
an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the required experience for each year of the required education, with a maximum substitution of four years.
