Job Description
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Boat Officer 1 located in Juneau!
What you will be doing:
  • The employee will purchase and maintain food stores, plan, prepare, and cook all meals for crew and passengers on scientific surveys.
  • The employee will maintain and clean the galley, dining, living area, equipment, dishes, and galley ware in port and at sea.
  • Deckhand work running hydraulic equipment and moving sampling gear, for deployment and retrieval.
  • Navigation for watch stands, and wheel watches during the ship's transits.
  • Assisting with the ship's husbandry, maintenance and upgrades.
Our organization, mission and culture:
The mission of the Commercial Fisheries division of ADF&G is to manage subsistence, commercial, and personal use fisheries in the interest of the economy and the general well-being of the citizens of the state, consistent with the sustained yield principle, and subject to allocations through public regulatory processes.
This position contributes to the success of the ADF&G Commercial Fisheries Division by maintaining the "R/V Medeia" which is a research survey and management platform that supports multiple commercial marine species/fisheries in Southeast Alaska.
The benefits of joining our team:
The dynamics of the work on the R/V Medeia changes with each scientific project conducted. There will be numerous voyages at sea over the course of a field season to study species such as red king crab, Tanner crab, sablefish, shrimp, and salmon. Working on the vessel at sea provides additional pay benefits. Other benefits include health insurance, retirement matching, and paid leave. The four-member crew is a dedicated and cohesive team working together to provide the researchers with a reliable, safe platform in which to gather fisheries data. The position combines duties of being a chef, deck hand, a mariner, a commercial fisherman, and a citizen scientist throughout the field season. With experience and proper certification, an incumbent of this position may be eligible to advance to higher positions on the vessel as vacancies arise.
The working environment you can expect:
This position is based in the Region 1, Douglas office. The daily work environment is dynamic and varied. It includes meal preparation and cooking as well as working on deck, performing vessel maintenance and preventative maintenance, often while living and working aboard the Medeia at sea throughout Southeast Alaska. Work is preformed indoors and outdoors during fair and inclement weather. The position requires working outside of normal business hours and on weekends and includes extensive sea time, which is compensated with premium pay. The Medeia spends between 90 and 140 days at sea annually between April and November. Trips range from 3 days to 24 days at sea. The majority of the trips are 7 to 10 days at sea. The position is permanent/seasonal with a typical duration of 6.5 months a year. The core start and stop dates are May 1 through November 15. The R/V Medeia does occasionally do additional surveys, and this can extend the positions working time in the early spring. The position normally does not work past November 15.
Who we are looking for:
  • Ability to effectively communicate through strong oral and written skills with a variety of people.
  • Proven ability to problem solve and work with a high degree of independence and attention to detail.
  • Ability to purchase and store food supplies for thirty (30) days. Cook and plan meals for up to 15 persons with the purchased supplies.
  • Ability to organize, secure, and clean all surfaces and spaces including decks, bulkheads, windows, various storage spaces, freezers, and refrigerators on a daily basis.
  • Experience performing arduous work during extended times at sea, sometimes during inclement weather.
