The Opportunity
The Bioprocessing Engineer will oversee engineering process, design and construction packages for greenfield facilities and support potential facility acquisitions. This position will require significant project management experience, preferably in commercial-scale fermentation. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in our organization, leading and overseeing various aspects of the engineering processes while ensuring operational efficiency, safety, and compliance. The ideal candidate should possess a strong technical background in bioprocessing, hands-on experience in scaled fermentation, and a proven track record of successful project management.
Responsibilities
  • Project Management: Lead and manage cross-functional teams to plan, execute, and deliver fermentation projects within scope, budget, and timeline constraints. Collaborate with stakeholders to define project objectives, milestones, and resource allocation.
  • Bioprocessing Optimization: Apply expertise in bioprocessing techniques to design, optimize, and scale-up production processes. Continuously evaluate and implement innovative solutions to enhance process efficiency, yield, and quality.
  • Process Monitoring and Control: Develop and implement strategies for real-time process monitoring, data analysis, and control to ensure consistent and high-quality ethanol production. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise.
  • Safety and Compliance: Maintain a strong focus on safety protocols and regulatory compliance throughout all stages of ethanol production. Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Foster effective communication and collaboration among multidisciplinary teams, including research and development, operations, and quality control. Present technical information and project updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Resource Management: Manage equipment, materials, and resources required for ethanol production projects. Ensure proper allocation and utilization to meet production targets.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Collect, analyze, and interpret process data to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and implement process improvements. Prepare regular reports and presentations to communicate project status and outcomes.
  • Training and Development: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members. Facilitate training programs to enhance technical skills and knowledge within the bioprocessing team.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with advancements in bioprocessing technology, industry best practices, and regulatory requirements. Propose and implement innovative strategies to optimize processes and drive continuous improvement.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Bioprocess Engineering, or related field.
  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in the fermentation industry, with a deep understanding of gas and traditional fermentation production processes.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing and delivering complex projects within established timelines and budgets.
  • Strong expertise in bioprocessing techniques, including fermentation, separation, purification, and distillation.
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards governing fermentation production and safety.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities, capable of working effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and software commonly used in bioprocessing.
  • Project management certification (e.g., PMP) is a plus.
