Under close supervision as an entry-level Biomedical Equipment Technician provide inventory control, minor repairs, testing and maintenance of medical equipment.
The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the biomedical engineering team to follow any required education and learning plan. Work with the team to support equipment throughout the Network. Monitor and observe repair, testing, calibration and maintenance services as required. Provide assistance to other biomedical engineering staff in performing repairs and maintenance to medical equipment. Maintain accurate documentation on all services, test and maintenance provided. As skill and education allow perform electrical safety, preventive maintenance and function test on various medical devices to department and manufacturer protocols as requested. As skill and education allow repair defective medical and other devices to meet or exceed required specifications. Participate in staff in-service educational programs and meetings as required. Assist in pre-purchase evaluations. Assist with research and technical consultation. Assist in evaluating equipment failures to identify any trends, design and or user problems. Assist with installations of medical and other devices and systems. Assist in minimizing turn-around or down-time on equipment. Work with the biomedical engineering team to complete any service at the minimum possible cost, while maintaining the highest level of quality. Assist with any product / equipment recalls and or alerts. Read, review and understand items related to the Joint Commission accreditation and other regulatory requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
2. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
3. Demonstrates/models the Network's Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
4. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.
5. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.
6. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Check equipment and record documentation to meet or exceed TJC, CAP, NEC, NFPA 99 or other regulatory organization requirements.
2. Other polices as described in Administrative Policies and Procedures, such as Emergency Management.
3. Other related duties as assigned.
PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Requires standing for up to eight hours a day or walking for up to four per day. Sitting for extended periods of time. Frequent fingering, handling and twisting and turning in using hand tools or other situations. Lifting and carrying items weighting up to 60 pounds. Occasional pulling and pushing objects weighing greater than 300 pounds. Climbing vertical ladders up to 20 feet. Seeing as it relates to normal vision, and hearing as it relates to normal hearing. Sense of smell as it relates to distinguishing burning or other odors when working on equipment.
POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS:
Physical exertion, due to the lifting requirement. Burns, electrical shock, exposure to hazardous substances (i.e.: solvents, etc....) and exposure to infectious body fluid and diseases.
Identified Risks, None Identified and/or Fit Tested Statement Which States That:
Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator.
SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE:
MOST COMPLEX DUTY:
The troubleshooting, repair and management of clinical equipment technology, especially when it is in use.
SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO):
Works under the supervision the Supervisor of Biomedical Engineering or assigned technician..
COMMUNICATIONS:
Daily contacts include patients, physicians, nurses, other hospital staff, and manufacturer representatives. Must be able to read, write and understand English.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must have a valid driver's license.
Mechanical aptitude is preferred.
Basic mechanical, electrical and electronics knowledge.
Basic knowledge of computers, servers and networks.
Basic knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Terminology preferred.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma required (may be in progress with certain programs). Must either be a recent graduate or be enrolled in an vocational- technical program, diploma, associate's or bachelor's degree program in Biomedical Engineering ,Electronic Technology or other related field. The Director of Biomedical Engineering reserves the right to approve and or deny based on the review of the specific program.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday through Friday, as scheduled, depending on the educational program or as assigned by Biomedical Engineering Management. Lunch is one-half hour in duration.
