Job description

 

CTG is seeking a Biomedical Engineering Technician for a client local to the Buffalo, NY area for a 6 Month Contract. This individual will be expected to perform preventative maintenance and repair of highly specialized biomedical/clinical equipment of advanced complexity to eliminate high-cost service contracts; documents detailed and accurate reports regarding the maintenance and repair of all biomedical/clinical equipment; assists the Research and Clinical Equipment Manager in the scheduling of monthly PM's; trains lower-level technicians on new equipment as well as providing staff in-services.

• Performs all duties of the Biomedical Engineering Technician.
• Performs repairs and preventive and corrective maintenance, calibration and electrical safety testing of specialized medical/clinical equipment that is the responsibility of the organization.
• Submits records of all preventive and corrections performed on each piece of specialized equipment in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with TJC standards.
• Communicates with medical and professional staff to ascertain that equipment functions properly and safely; explains the theory of use; demonstrates correct operation of various types of biomedical equipment to medical and professional staff to help in solving reported equipment malfunctions which may involve operator misunderstanding.
• Listens and communicates effectively both verbally and in writing with staff members and professional medical staff.
• Functions as the subject matter expert in the field of the biomedical/Clinical Engineering specialty.
• Develops test protocols; tests equipment set ups needed for the Biomedical Engineering Technician and Senior Biomedical Engineering Technician's use in incoming inspection and equipment evaluations.
• Analyzes needs; assists in equipment selection and application.
• Assists the Research and Clinical Equipment Manager with decisions relative to the hiring, promotion and termination of biomedical technical staff.
• May be responsible for the daily operation of the Biomedical Engineering Department in the absence of the Research and Clinical Equipment Manager.
• Coordinates the services of outside vendors as it pertains to the installation and/or repair of medical equipment; assesses vendor service intervention as it relates to equipment up time.
• Prepares regular and special forms or reports.
• Assists in the development of new or existing programs and services, as assigned.
• Participates on new products committee; documents all staff training.
• Assists the Research and Clinical Equipment Manager in the prioritizing of equipment repairs and preventive maintenance; maintains database of inventoried equipment in TMS database program and working inventory of common repair parts.
• Performs instructional activities that will assist other technicians in learning and performing preventive maintenance procedures and corrective troubleshooting and repair processes.
• Learns and teaches the theory, design, operation, and applications of new or unfamiliar biomedical equipment to fellow technicians.
• Provides staff in-services for newly purchased medical equipment as well as in-services for newly hired staffing.
• Participates in the development of training programs for the entire department.
• Coordinates customer requirements, resource availability, cost/time limitations and technical resources.
• Responds to all requests of an urgent nature with respect to medical equipment.
• Attends required monthly meetings in the absence of the Research and Clinical Equipment Manager.
• Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, and compliance standards.
• Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature, and participating in in-service meetings and workshops.
• Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes, and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.
• Attends meetings as required.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• Must be specialized in one or more of the following modalities: anesthesia, imaging/x-ray, lasers or integration, ventilators, ultrasound, DaVinci robot.
• Must demonstrate an advanced mechanical and electronic troubleshooting aptitude.
• Must have vendor-specific training on some biomedical/clinical equipment such as surgical lights and tables, video light sources, electrosurgical units, defibrillators, EKG equipment, dialysis equipment, anesthesia equipment, physiologic monitors, autoclaves, ventilators, centrifuges, blood warmers, x-ray, etc.
• Must demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Access, Excel, Power Point and Word.
• Must possess knowledge of TJC rules and regulations as it pertains to medical equipment.
• Must have the ability to prepare well researched written reports, studies, and correspondence.
• Must have the ability to troubleshoot and repair sophisticated biomedical electronic equipment.
• Must have the ability to remain calm and decisive in stressful situations.
• Must demonstrate good judgment, tact, and professionalism under adverse conditions.
• Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.
• Must be a self-starter that can make independent decisions when needed and complete tasks with minimal supervision.
• Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and complete them in a timely fashion.
• Must possess excellent public relations skills.
• Must be detail oriented.
• Must always maintain a professional appearance.
• Must have the ability to document all work and maintain accurate detailed reports.

• Must be an excellent advocate for Biomedical Engineering with a desire to be a wise, conservative steward of financial and staff resources.
• Must be an excellent, proactive communicator.

 

Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Information Technology or a related field and the equivalent of four (4) years of full-time biomedical/clinical experience including biomedical/clinical product specific OEM (original equipment manufacturer) training in specialty; or

 - Associate's degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics, Information Technology or a related field and the equivalent of six (6) years of full-time biomedical/clinical experience including
biomedical/clinical product specific OEM (original equipment manufacturer) training in specialty.
