Job description

General Summary of PositionPerforms functional testing, preventive maintenance, calibration and repair of basic to complex biomedical instrumentation throughout the hospital. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs routine scheduled preventive maintenance on a wide variety of basic to complex electronic and electromechanical patient care equipment according to department's established schedule and guidelines. Scheduled maintenance includes visual and mechanical inspection, safety testing, performance testing, schedule parts replacement and adjustment, and corrective action which include adjustments, calibration and minor repairs.
  • Performs inspection and performance verification of new/incoming biomedical instrumentation prior to clinical use.
  • Performs needed corrective maintenance and calibration of equipment as required, responding to telephone or direct requests for service from equipment users. Troubleshooting will be to the component level whenever feasible.
  • Accurately and completely documents results of all maintenance, inspections and other activities performed according to department's policies and procedures.
  • Instructs clinical users in the proper operation, safety and routine care of biomedical instrumentation.
  • Reports and/or makes recommendations to Director/Manager regarding preventive maintenance procedures and schedules, operational improvements, incident investigations, etc.
  • Oversees warranty repairs and contracted services by outside service representatives.
  • Requisitions service parts and spares as needed for corrective maintenance or stock replenishment. Suggest items for one time or stock purchases. Investigates alternative parts sources for cost savings, quality improvement or faster delivery.
  • Interacts and communicates effectively with supervisors, other department staff, clinical users, vendors and outside technical support and service representatives.
  • Assumes other duties and responsibilities that are appropriate to the position and area. The above responsibilities are a general description of the level and nature of the work assigned to this classification and is not to be considered as all inclusive.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • Associate's degree required or
    • Vocational/Technical Diploma or equivalent trade school or military certificate in electronics technology or biomedical equipment technology required or

    Experience
    • 3-4 years Experience in the repair, maintenance and calibration of electronic instrumentation with particular emphasis on medical instrumentation. required and
    • Specialized technical training and/or experience involving medical instrumentation of specific types preferred

    Licenses and Certifications
    • Certified Biomedical Technician (CBET)-AAMI AAMI BMET Certification preferred and
    • Factory training on specific types of equipment to be maintained is also desirable, as applicable to GUH. preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • KNOWLEDGE OF STATE OF THE ART ANALOG AND DIGITAL ELECTRONICS, MICROPROCESSOR THEORY AND OPERATION.
    • KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE USE OF EQUIPMENT DESCRIBED ABOVE.
    • KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE WITH MECHANICAL AND ELECTROMECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES, GEARS, MOTORS, PISTONS, SOLENOIDS, VALVES FITTINGS, ETC IS HIGHLY DESIREABLE.
    • KNOWLEDGE OF HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY, MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY, CLINICAL PRACTICE.
    • KNOWLEDGE OF BIOMEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION, DEVICES AND TECHNIQUES OF MEASUREMENT.
    • ABILITY TO TROUBLESHOOT AND REPAIR COMPLEX ANALOG AND DIGITAL CIRCUITRY TO THE COMPONENT LEVEL WITH A MINIMUM OF SUPERVISORY ASSISTANCE.
    • ABLE TO RELATE WELL AND DEAL WITH THE NEEDS OF CLINICAL USERS, INCLUDING WORKING UNDER THE PRESSURE OF TIME CONSTRAINTS, URGENT NEED FOR THE EQUIPMENT, AND THE RISKS INVOLVED WITH IMPROPER OPERATION OF CLINICAL EQUIPMENT.
    • ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WELL WITH OTHERS IN DISCUSSING EQUIPMENT ISSUES WITH STAFF AND PROVIDING TRAINING TO STAFF.
    • ABILITY TO OPERATE IN A POSITIVE CUSTOMER SERVICE ENVIRONMENT.
    • PERFORM DOCUMENTATION IN A DETAILED, NEAT AND ORGANIZED MANNER.
    • COMPUTER LITERACY, BOTH HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE ARE REQUIRED.
