Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a Biologist/Ecologist/Environmental Scientist to join our Enviro Socio Permitting team in our Syracuse, New York office. The successful candidate will support biota sampling/surveys, field biology, habitat and general environmental assessments, as well as assist with reporting, agency coordination, and permit compliance. The ideal candidate will have experience working on and around water, including driving and trailering boats of various sizes on both large and small waterbodies and performing basic equipment maintenance. The ideal candidate will also have a background in performing fieldwork and wildlife identification including, but not limited, to fish, invertebrates, mammals, birds, and herptiles. Projects are often fast-paced, multi-faceted, and geographically diverse. The position will require overnight travel and will periodically include working long hours outdoors in sometimes remote conditions. The position will require a candidate to work collaboratively with a team of resource specialists, planners, and engineers and have the capacity to balance varying priorities and tasks to work on multiple projects concurrently and meet deliverable deadlines. Role accountabilities:

As a Biologist/Ecologist/Environmental Scientist, you will apply your technical knowledge to work with client teams to provide high quality deliverables to support planning and permitting for the energy industry, infrastructure, water resource clients, and emerging markets. You will be an important member of the Enviro Socio Permitting team interacting with junior and senior level biologists/ecologists, engineers, senior technical experts, and project/program managers as part of an interdisciplinary team.

You will be responsible for supporting a wide variety of work including, but not limited to, biota sampling/surveys, sediment and surface water sampling, incident response work, habitat assessments, other environmental field surveys, and you will collect field data using handheld global positioning system units and tablets utilizing Fulcrum, FieldMaps, Survey 123 for ArcGIS, or similar programs. This will require a working knowledge of GPS systems and the ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather. This role will require the ability to travel up to up to 75% of the time during parts of the year, including overnight travel.

You will also be tasked with helping to prepare technical reports, work plans, NEPA reports, and other environmental documents to support environmental permitting. You will also support and participate in agency consultations for threatened and endangered species and manage desktop environmental assessments to identify potential permitting requirements.

In this role, you will use your excellent technical writing and communications skills to provide support to project teams throughout the country. You will also assist with the growth of new and existing client relationships through delivery of quality work and data.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or similar environmental discipline by the time you begin working at Arcadis.
  • Experience in wildlife collection, biological sampling/surveys, habitat assessments, or environmental planning and permitting.
  • Experience working on and near water, trailering, and driving various vehicles and boats is preferred. Experience or interest in scientific diving is beneficial, but not required.
  • Experience preparing environmental documents and reports, including technical reports, permit applications, and similar.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting environmental surveys, such as threatened and endangered species surveys, fauna/floral inventories, or others and reporting the results.
  • Experience with evaluating project compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Task management experience and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency or general understanding of basic vehicle and equipment maintenance is beneficial.
