Job Duties: The Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission (ANHC) Biologist Supervisor (Chief of Research and Inventory) determines protection strategies for conservation program development, implementation, and management; manages the Research and Inventory Section; and maintains cooperative relationships with other state and federal agencies and other organizations. The position is governed by agency/institution policy and state and federal laws.
Develops protection and management strategies for the ANHC System of Natural Areas: Determines priorities, schedules, and protocols for inventory to assess land protection needs and investigate opportunities. Collects and analyzes data. Quantifies results and reports progress. Participates in and identifies priorities for ANHC land acquisition planning activities.
Manages the Research and Inventory section: Administers the Heritage Program. Identifies priorities of staff. Manages and monitors staff performance. Prepares and administers annual budget. Administers contracts to conduct research and inventory. Oversees the ANHC Herbarium. Implements assignments of the Director.
Maintains cooperative relationships with other state agencies, federal agencies, and other organizations to accomplish the primary goals of the ANHC: Identifies collaborative land protection priorities and landscape-scale projects. Shares the ANHC's knowledge base in technical and policy forums. Coordinates with other state, federal and private organizations. Develops and administers programs to promote understanding of conservation Programs. Responds to inquiries. Prepares summary reports.
The Biologist Supervisor (Chief of Research and Inventory) has regular contact with commission members, department staff, representatives of private organizations, related state and federal agency personnel, government officials, contractors, educators, students, constituency groups, and the general public.
Applicants must meet or exceed the following qualifications: The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in a biological science, wildlife management or a related filed; plus four years of experience in a field of biological science, including two years in supervisory or leadership capacity.
