Job description

The Institute for Protein Innovation (IPI)is a nonprofit research organization advancing protein science to accelerate research and improve human health. Founded in 2017 and located in Boston’s Longwood Medical Area, the Institute’s three-pronged strategy is to build protein tools, conduct related internal research and develop educational programs for the protein science and biological research communities.
With a significant endowment, IPI uniquely combines the freedom of academia with the high throughput and scale of industry to take on transformative projects. IPI has built a robust platform for discovering, developing, and distributing synthetic antibodies and other protein tools to share with the biomedical community. The Institute's deep protein expertise, collaborative spirit and research tools are powering new biomedical and therapeutic discoveries with a growing community of researchers at Harvard Medical School, Boston Children's Hospital and other institutions across Greater Boston and beyond.

Purpose
The Bioinformatics Scientist is responsible for analyzing antibody selection data from yeast display, implementing machine learning algorithms to enhance data analysis and lead selection, and managing the data pipeline from raw file processing to database storage. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, creative problem-solving, and collaborative teamwork to contribute to our mission of advancing biomedical research.
Reports to: Director of Antibody Discovery and Library Design

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain software tools for analyzing antibody selection data from Sanger and next-generating sequencing of yeast display experiments.
  • Implement and optimize machine learning algorithms for data analysis to maximize lead selection.
  • Interface with scientists to understand the experimental strategies employed during antibody discovery and implement this knowledge into the analysis pipeline.
  • Provide data-driven recommendations on antibody leads to support research and development efforts.
  • Generate compelling data analysis visuals and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manually curate datasets as necessary to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Manage the entire data stream, from processing raw files to secure database storage, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
  • Interface with laboratory information management systems (LIMS), specifically Benchling, and cloud computing platforms, such as AWS, to ensure seamless data integration and management.
  • Stay current with the latest developments in bioinformatics, machine learning, and antibody research to continually enhance data analysis strategies.

Qualifications
  • PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Data Science or a related field
  • Proven experience in software development for biological data analysis, preferably related to antibody selection or protein engineering
  • Strong programming skills in Python or other relevant programming languages
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms and their application in biological data analysis
  • Familiarity with data curation and quality control processes
  • Proficient in managing and analyzing data in cloud computing environments, particularly AWS
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to generate data analysis reports and presentations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team
IPI provides competitive compensation and an excellent benefits package to support physical, mental and financial health. Highlights of benefits include:
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Flexible spending accounts and a healthcare reimbursement account
  • 401(k) plan with generous 6% employer match – immediately 100% vested
  • Generous PTO package
  • Commuter and parking reimbursement
  • Career development opportunities
