Job description

This position is available to Northeastern University students who are currently enrolled and eligible for Co-op January 2024 - June 2024.
The Computational Sciences Department at The Jackson Laboratory is looking for motivated students interested in advanced bioinformatics and biomedical software development for cutting-edge research focused on improving human health.
You will be working with a small and dedicated team to identify the most accurate genome to use for transcript alignment to genetically diverse mouse genomes. This is important for accurate estimation of transcript and gene abundance and has implications for RNA-sequencing read alignment in other model organisms, as well as humans. This project will focus on improving the alignment of RNA-sequencing to genetically diverse genomes. The incumbent will learn to work with genome sequences and annotation, analyze RNA-sequencing data, and build analysis pipelines using bash and R.
Key Responsibilities
  • Work with a small team under the direction of a Senior Computational Scientist,
  • Evaluate the transcript annotation of different genome assemblies
  • Align RNA-sequencing data sets to several different genome assemblies
  • Assess the quality of the alignments, and
  • Compare the alignment quality between genomes
  • Ideally, produce a publication describing your results

Expected Outcomes
  • experience working in a highly productive, data science environment,
  • exposure to leading-edge methods and technologies utilized in advanced biotech enterprises,
  • experience with genome assemblies and gene annotation,
  • experience with RNA-sequencing alignment and analysis,
  • an understanding of the potential career opportunities at JAX and in the field,
  • authorship of a scientific publication.

Desired Qualifications
JAX encourages application from a diverse mix of educational experiences and backgrounds. Preferred qualifications for this project include:
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Graduate student in Data Science or Bioinformatics programs.
  • competence in bash (variables, loops, flow control statements), and
  • R (programming language),
  • familiarity with basic biology and genetics, and
  • some experience with bioinformatics.

Applicants should be:
  • able to demonstrate successful completion of coursework in the related field(s),
  • motivated, enthusiastic, and willing to learn,
  • able to solve problems independently and to ask for help when needed,
  • experienced in working on projects with a team, and
  • responsible, reliable, accountable, attentive to detail and quality.

This position is fully remote. To stay well-connected and on track, you will be expected to meet with your supervisor several times per week.
Please include a resume and cover letter to be considered for this role.
