JOB DESCRIPTION:
Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national program that works to make early literacy a standard part of pediatric primary care to promote language and social/ emotional development. Our ROR program at Bellevue was the first one in NYC and is currently one of the largest. One of the unique components of our program is the addition of bilingual parent educators who set the stage for the providers’ intervention starting in the prenatal stage. Through book role modeling and other modalities, parent educators promote and teach serve/ return interaction and attachment to caregivers while also advancing language acquisition, brain stimulation and ultimately school readiness in all children but especially in birth-five years of age. Parent educators also provide essential evidence-based patient education focusing on health literacy strategies through our Health Education and Literacy for Parents Project (H.E.L.P.) and Growing Healthy Together Initiative to help parents make informed decisions about their children’s health and development.
QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of Bachelor’s degree in an accredited college or university and six months of full-time satisfactory experience in one or more of the following fields: nursery school, primary school, child group work, or healthcare setting.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Promote, maintain, and improve pediatric patient’s health by assisting patients and their caregivers to adopt healthy behaviors that facilitate healthy development of relational health and illness prevention.
2. Plan and implement programs specifically designed to address the patient’s needs.
3. Evaluate design, present, recommend and disseminate culturally appropriate patient education information and materials.
4. Consult with healthcare team regarding related patient education services.
5. Present information effectively to diverse population
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Early Literacy/ Health Education
1. Educate patients and their caregivers on developmentally appropriate strategies that promote early relational health and enhance language and literacy development in an outpatient setting.
2. Coordinate and plan yearly events that promote early literacy.
3. Educate patients on obesity prevention strategies through the Greenlight HELP curriculum and Growing Healthy Together targeted patient education lessons.
4. Collect and analyze data to identify patients’ needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs design to encourage healthy lifestyles.
5. Work closely and collaboratively with the Pediatric team as a resource for developmental and parenting concerns and introduce appropriate referrals for patients within the pediatric clinic and in their own community.
6. Respond to developmental questions between visits either in person, via phone, email or virtually.
7. Maintain HIPAA compliant database of patients served by program
8. General administration and maintenance responsibilities:
a. Collect and maintain data for the purpose of program reporting and evaluation
b. Work with Volunteers:
i. Orientation of new volunteers
ii. Scheduling of reading sessions
iii. Performance evaluation
iv. Provide assistance in written recommendations
c. Assist Program Director with program assessment and implementation including supervision of part-time staff.
d. Presenting among mixed crowds such as board members, potential funders, prospective volunteers
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
· Experience working with young children and parents/caregivers.
· Strong interpersonal skills.
· Organized with excellent time management skills.
· Fluent in MS Word and Excel.
· Ability to lift and move 25-40 pound boxes of books.
