Position Purpose
The Behavioral Health Resource Director supports the ongoing efforts of Camp staff to ensure the well-being of all campers and staff. This position primarily supports Camp staff in the realms of coaching and providing guidance on the mental, emotional, and social health needs of campers. Occasionally, this position will support campers in crisis situations, offering interventions and behavioral support as needed. The Behavioral Health Resource Director is NOT a therapy provider or caregiver; we do not provide formal therapy to campers, their families, counselors, or any other staff members. The person serving in this position should have formal training in youth and adult mental health, including but not limited to a master's degree in social work or counseling psychology, and should be passionate about ensuring the well-being and safety of children and staff members.
Key Responsibilities
  • Consult with all Camp staff on the mental, emotional, and social health of campers and staff
  • Coach/train staff on best practices for working with the mental, emotional, and social health needs of campers.
  • Coach/train staff in youth development skills including proactive and positive discipline and restorative justice approaches to youth behavior management.
  • Serve as a resource for staff on camper trauma, mental health, and behavior management issues.
  • Provide support and crisis intervention to campers as needed.
  • Create individualized plans for youth who need more support, partnering with Camp staff, parents/guardians, and others as necessary.
  • Ensure campers with special needs receive individualized support and accommodations.
  • Observe and modify Camp programs to ensure they meet the needs of all campers.
  • Facilitate and model a strengths-based, family-centered approach.
  • Serve as a liaison between Camp and families and other stakeholders.
  • Provide consultation and support mandated CPS reporting.
  • Support village leadership in maintaining communication with the health center.
  • Ensure incident reports are completed and reviewed timely.
  • Model developmentally appropriate communication and engagement with campers.
  • Model a wide range of effective large-group facilitation strategies.
  • Foster character development consistent with BGCSF philosophy.
  • Evaluate camper and staff experiences regularly to ensure Camp is an inclusive and safe space.
  • Support meaningful community service projects that have a clear impact on the larger community.
  • Through a lens of restorative justice; support and communicate with staff and campers through difficult youth behaviors, ensuring that all individuals feel heard, valued, and safe.
  • Identify signs and symptoms of common childhood and adolescent health problems, including mental health issues, social issues, and risky behavior.
  • Attend all required meetings and training.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and paperwork.
  • Work with Camp Mendocino's COVID-19 team to follow all health and safety protocols.
  • Understand and help to implement emergency policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as specified by the direct supervisor.

By the end of the summer, an incredible Behavioral Health Resource Director will:
  • Advocate for camper wellbeing & mental health.
  • Support a positive and inclusive Camp community.
  • Coach staff in best practices working with youth.
  • Champion safety throughout camp.

Requirements
Required Skills
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in youth development.
  • Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances.
  • Ability to develop and implement a plan for campers with special needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with youth experiencing mental health and/or behavioral crises.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and communicate with coworkers, parents, and campers.
  • Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field and/or experience at Residential Treatment Facility; MSW or currently enrolled in MSW program.
  • Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting.
  • Experience coaching staff.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Must be able to walk on uneven terrain for at least 3 miles.
  • Must be able to stand for 8 hours (with breaks).
  • Must be able to work in temperatures ranging from 30° to 100°.

Lodging
Lodging is provided for all staff on site. The Behavioral Health Resource Director will not be required to stay in a cabin with youth on a regular basis, but will be assigned bunk-style indoor housing that may be shared with up to 3 other staff members.
Schedule
  • Temporary/Seasonal Summer position.
  • Applicants should be available June 4 - August 7, 2024 to work & live on-site at our Camp location in Northern California (Mendocino County).
  • Staff members work 40-56 hours/week depending on position with two days off per week. Days off vary per session.

Pay
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and BGCSF needs. At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and are dependent on circumstances for each position. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry level, mid - level or top of the range for their role and compensation. As such, a reasonable estimate for this temporary summer position from June 4 - August 7, 2024, is $7,001.12.
