Job description

Position Summary:

The Behavioral Health Consultant designs, plans, promotes and provides wellness programs for university students. Responsibilities include facilitation of group workshops and one-on-one consultations, daily operations of programs, campus-community collaboration, and data analysis/reporting.

This position is full-time during the school year and half-time during the summer; full-time hours start one week prior to the start of the fall semester and end on the last day of the spring semester. Salary is adjusted based on hours worked.

Specific Job Duties & Tasks:

  • Identifies and develops individual as well as population-level strategies to support campus well-being efforts.
  • Develops, promotes and implements specific goals and objectives of wellness programs.
  • Participates in delivery of training and educational outreach via various methods.
  • Defines key learning objectives for training sessions.
  • Provides education and early intervention to students in one-on-one appointments, including substance use and wellness coaching.
  • Analyzes data, prepares reports and disseminates information to stakeholders.

Student Wellness at the University of Iowa supports student success by promoting sustainable health behaviors and fostering a culture of wellness for students at the University. We offer appointments, group workshops, events and other programming for students on nutrition, fitness, mindfulness, stress management, alcohol and drugs, tobacco/e-cigarettes, sexual health and sleep.

About the Division of Student Life:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Health Promotion, Health Education, Psychology or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Reasonable program experience (typically 1-3 years) in health promotion or health education.
  • Some experience (typically 6 months – 1 year) in public speaking, technical writing and/or teaching.
  • Commitment to and alignment with the values of the Division of Student Life, including demonstrated active commitment to creating and maintaining a welcoming and respectful environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of young adult growth and development.
  • Skills in interpersonal relationships and ability to maintain effective working relations with others.
  • Knowledge of substance abuse prevention and intervention.
  • Proficient in computer software applications including desktop publishing.
  • Understanding of web-based environments.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Higher Education & Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Professional experience in higher education setting.
  • Professional experience working with health topics relevant to college students, specifically substance abuse prevention and intervention.
  • Certified Health Education Specialist.
  • Certified Health & Wellness Coach.
  • Bi-lingual skills in a foreign language.
