The Behavior Technician will provide educational support, in the form of skills instruction and behavior reduction protocol implementation, based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to children enrolled in special education services in the public-school setting. This assignment will collect data on programs, assist with staff training, and assist the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with assessments, as needed. This assignment will be responsible for implementing the duties of classroom paraprofessionals in the temporary absence of these team members. Essential components of this position are listed below but subject to change at the discretion of the BCBA. This job description describes essential job functions, but does not provide an exhaustive list of duties that may be assigned. Specific duties & responsibilities will vary depending upon classroom assignment.
This assignment will be housed at West Valley High School.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provide direct educational support in 1:1 and group settings utilizing a combination of intensive teaching and natural environment training arrangements.
- Follow the prescribed behavioral skill acquisition and behavior reduction protocols.
- Collect, record, and summarize data on observable student behavior.
- Assist with staff training in line with the student's individualized education and behavior reduction protocols.
- Effectively communicate with teachers and other school staff regarding student progress as instructed by the BCBA.
- Utilize safe & appropriate prevention, de-escalation, and physical intervention procedures when working with students.
- Maintain student confidentiality.
- Assist classroom teachers/staff, district Behavior Specialists, and the BCBA with skill acquisition and behavior reduction assessments.
- Assist classroom teachers/staff, district Behavior Specialists, and the BCBA in preparing student materials as instructed.
- Maintain and acquire technical knowledge by attending required trainings (Right Response certification, Registered Behavior Technician certification, etc.).

Basic & Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to assume and maintain a variety of postures (kneeling, squatting, crawling, sitting, standing) for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to sit on the floor or stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be willing and able to restrain/hold/transport and utilize quick body movements as indicated in the Behavior Intervention Plan or Emergency Response Protocol in the course of working with children with challenging behavior.
- Must have manual dexterity to perform specific computer and electronic device functions for data collection.
- Must be able to receive detailed information through oral communication.
- Must have visual acuity to read and comprehend written communication through computer, electronic devices, and paper means.
- Must have reliable transportation and be willing and able to travel between different job sites within the West Valley School District.
Qualifications:
- Current Safety Care Certification OR ability to attend training to become certified
- Current RBT/CBT certification
- Bilingual Preferred
Experience:
- Required: None
- Preferred: Experience working with children ages 3-21 in a classroom or 1:1 setting; experience implementing procedures based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis
Education:
- Required: High School Diploma OR equivalent and must have completed 60 hours of college coursework from an accredited university. Enrollment in college coursework for at least 6 hours per semester from an accredited university and/or at least 6 months of experience delivering Applied Behavior Analysis services may be substituted for 60 hours of completed college coursework.
- Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Education, Applied Behavior Analysis, or related field.
Reporting Relationship:
- Direct Work Supervisor: Behavior Specialist/BCBA
- Employment Supervisor: Director of Special Education
Related Training:
- Responsible for completing and maintaining all required certifications and trainings once employed including, but not limited to: Right Response, Fingerprinting & Background Checks, RBT trainings and other company in-services and trainings as directed by employment supervisor.
