Reports To: Ellen Lai, Beef Sustainability Intern on the ABS Beef Product Development Team 

 

Position Location: DeForest, WI

The intern will assist our efforts to quantify the environmental impact of our genetics on beef production systems using data-driven analytics. The intern will learn how we as a genetics company think of sustainability and what role data plays in advancing sustainability. Based on this knowledge, the intern will build analytical pipelines that transform raw data into sustainability metrics. This intern will work alongside our beef product development team to support sustainability-related data aggregation and analysis. 


  • Digitize paper records 
  • Use various statistical and analytic tools to reproducibly query, clean, and summarize data 
  • Cleaned data will be used to inform calculations of the environmental footprint of genetic improvement from ABS’s proprietary genetic program 

    • Current MS or PhD student in Animal Science, Dairy Science, Quantitative Genetics, Computer Science, Statistics, Data Science or related field, required 
    • Strong analytical skills, familiarity with statistical packages (R, SQL, bash, python, etc.), and experience with scripting or programming tools required 
    • Direct agricultural experience (plant or animal) is a positive but not required attribute 
    • Strong interest in data analysis, sustainable livestock production, and animal genetics and breeding preferred 
    • Live and display the Genus values at all times in their day-to-day activities. 
    • Maintain professional verbal and written communications with co-workers, internal and external customers, and vendors at all times. 
    • Be flexible with respect to job responsibilities and consistently strive to be an effective team member.
