As a Battery Validation Engineer, you will be part of the battery team working closely with the cross functional partners in systems engineering, thermal engineering, software engineering to ensure that the battery module meets systems level performance metrics
- Work with Validation Engineers to execute test plans
- Ensure testing resources (test channels, equipment, people) are correctly allocated
- Develop processes, frameworks and best practices to scale validation across multiple programs
- Electrical and thermal battery characterization in system under different usage scenarios
- Develop detailed test plans for various product categories and execute test plans
- Develop test boards, test fixtures to validate the performance of batteries
- Direct external vendors and test labs to develop test equipment and perform testing as needed
- Report results to a broad audience and work with design teams to improve performance
- Support technical root cause analysis and resolution of issues found during testing
- Support hardware integration related to interfacing hardware and connection issues
- Develop processes, frameworks and best practices to scale testing and validation across multiple programs
- Manage and maintain equipment calibration including: tracking lab inventory of all calibratable hardware, arranging periodic calibrations per manufacturing specs, and procuring replacement hardware when needed
- Ensure that data management software for the various test equipment is working correctly
- Proactively work to resolve problems that arise related to new testing protocols
- Support lab expansion and installations as needed by working with various facilities teams and ensure all environmental, health and safety requirements are met
- Weekly reporting of test status, equipment utilizations, issues and forecasting
- Identify system interactions and design factors which impact battery module performance such as charge time affected by system thermals and battery age, interaction with accessories and help assist product claims on battery runtimes
- Battery gas gauge performance characterization at both module and system level
- Domestic and/or international travel to suppliers in Asia and test labs in the US
Minimum Qualifications:
- B.S. in Electrical / Materials/Mechanical or Chemical Engineering
- 3+ years experience in working on validation of Li-ion batteries
- Experience with lab testing equipment including scopes, power supplies, electronic loads, functional generators
- Experience with scripting software such as Python
- Experience with battery testing equipment such as Maccors, Arbins
- Prior experience working on consumer electronics
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5+ years experience in working on validation of Li-ion batteries
- Strong understanding of battery protection circuits, communication protocols such as I2C, UART, chargers
- Strong EE background in analog and digital circuits, schematic and layout capture tools
- Familiarity with statistical tools, DOEs and packages such as JMP / Minitab
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience to work effectively in a dynamic team-oriented environment
- Proven communication skills
