Job Title: Baton Rouge Economic Justice Organizer 

Location: Baton Rouge

Job Type: Full Time 

Reports To: Lead Organizer or Co-Director


Purpose of Position: 

The role of the Step Up Louisiana Economic Justice Organizer will be to coordinate the labor and community organizing work in Baton Rouge for Step Up’s Economic Justice committee membership and campaigns.

Our members step up and go beyond voting to campaign, organize from a racial justice perspective and hold political and community leaders accountable. We work in our own neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces to disrupt systemic oppression. We build the people-power needed to win in our city and state. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

To conduct broad and intensive outreach efforts to low-wage workers, customers, students, faith communities, business owners, and community activists by:

  1. Building one-on-one relationships. 
  2. Identifying and developing leaders to guide and lead campaigns. 
  3. Shop floor labor organizing 
  4. Recruiting active dues-paying members who align with our values and who are active in our campaigns 
  5. Meeting membership recruitment and leadership development goals
  6. Participating in local GOTV and civic engagement efforts 
  7. Developing the leadership of our members through a defined leadership ladder program 
  8. Educating the membership about our core issues 
  9. Supporting other statewide activities of the organization as assigned
  10. Conducting individual/group meetings to discuss and plan organizing campaigns. 
  11. Motivating individuals and groups of community leaders to take action. 
  12. Working to involve community allies and coalition partners in organizing campaigns. 
  13. Working with our members to develop strategies for how to win our campaigns Campaign planning and work planning
  14. Leading at least one campaign at a time


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • At least 2 years of organizing experience in labor, community, faith, student or political organizations or campaigns 
  • Computer skills including the Google Suite (docs, sheets, calendar), typing skills, email, and willingness and ability to learn new technology like our database
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (listening, speaking, and writing) ·
  • Commitment to the social justice movement and passion for winning change with low-income people
  • Ability to organize community members to take action on multiple issues for local neighborhood campaigns  as well as city and statewide campaigns 
  • Ability to work independently and manage a volunteer team 
  • Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment and be detail-oriented
  • Ability to fundraise and sign up dues-paying members for Step Up Louisiana 
  • Possession of excellent listening skills and the ability to comprehend the concerns of others.
  • The ability to make and follow through on a work plan. 
  • The ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Willingness to conduct house visits and work site visits. 
  • Willingness to travel out of state and overnight quarterly and throughout the state as needed
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Personal vehicle available for work use, must have insurance and driver's license and be comfortable driving with members. Possession of basic map navigation skills is a plus. 


Physical Requirements: 

The position is based in Baton Rouge. Work is generally performed from the office setting or other location to complete the required assignments of the position.
