Job Summary:
The Department of Surgery at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Bariatric Surgeon / Clinical Assistant Professor (GFT). The successful candidate will:
- Have appropriate academic credentials and an excellent clinical record to lead, develop, and run a tertiary referral bariatric surgery program.
- Perform MIS/Robotic Bariatric Surgery.
- Possess clinical expertise in open and laparoscopic/robotic primary and revision bariatric operations, and have a strong belief in the multidiscipline approach to weight loss.
- Perform bariatric procedures such as gastroplasty surgery, gastric bypass surgery and jejunoileal bypass surgery and the surgical implantation of a gastric band.
- Establish, lead and work towards becoming a MBSAQIP accredited program becoming the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Director.
- Also perform minimally invasive general surgery cases.
- Be responsible for the design and all operational aspects of the bariatric surgery program.
- Provide leadership to establish/maintain Bariatric and Obesity Services at University Hospital of Brooklyn.
- Foster collegial relationship across the Department of Medicine and Department of Surgery to provide the most optimal care and services to the Bariatric and Obesity community.
- Increase awareness of Bariatric and Obesity Services patient care programs and identify opportunities for local market expansion.
- Attend all meetings, conferences and surgical Grand Rounds, quality assessment or improvement committees, etc.
- Attend meetings where patient clinical reviews, as well as operative selections, planning, and debriefing will be done collaboratively.
- Participate in the teaching, education and supervision of medical students and residents from the Department of Surgery and other disciplines.
Required Qualifications:
- New York State MD or DO Licensure.
- Completion of a general surgery accredited residency and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship.
- General surgery BC/BE.
- Distinguished record of exemplary clinical practice.
- Strong interest, success in, and commitment to surgical education and research scholarly activity.
- Must possess and exhibit strong leadership traits, especially leading and managing change.
- Experience work successfully and collaboratively with colleagues, community leaders/physicians, and hospital administration and staff.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimally Invasive Fellowship.
- Experience in developing and supervising research programs; history in obtaining research funding.
