JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Animal Diagnostic Lab at Penn State is searching for aBacteriology Research Technologistto serve in the bacteriology section of the Animal Diagnostic Laboratory (ADL). The purpose of this position is to protect animal health, human health, and ensure food safety. The successful applicant will be expected to perform a broad range of testing in bacteriology, on a variety of specimens and samples, to include sample handling, culturing, bacterial enumeration and identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and molecular microbiology. The successful candidate will also assist with processing and culturing of egg and environmental samples for the Pennsylvania Egg Quality Assurance Program (PEQAP), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), and National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP). Additional job responsibilities include:
  • Reviewing results for accuracy, entering data and preparing reports.
  • Purchasing of laboratory supplies, routine laboratory and equipment maintenance, preparation of reagents and materials, and record keeping.
  • Adhering to the ADL's quality standards.
  • Cross-training in order to be able to assist in other areas of the ADL.

This is a limited term appointment funded for one year from date of hire, with excellent possibility of re-funding.
Education and Experience:
This position will be filled as a level 1 or 2, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Typical requirements for a level 1 includes a Bachelor's degree or higher, plus 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.
Clinical/microbiological laboratory experience is highly desirable, as is proficiency with computers, technology and laboratory information management systems. The ability to work effectively as part of a team in a busy laboratory environment, acquire and implement new skills and techniques, and handle numerous tasks and responsibilities are expected. Veterinary medical, farm, and/or agribusiness background experience is preferred.
