Job description

UTHealth seeks an entry-level AWS Cloud Administrator to join the Cloud Orchestration team within DCO. This team focuses on planning and developing Amazon, Azure, and Google Clouds. Still, this role is strictly concentrated on AWS services. Support for these systems includes design, implementation, support, troubleshooting, and working closely with application owners, peers, and customers to help with performance tuning, troubleshooting, and upgrades. At the core, this person must understand the basics of networking, server administration, and troubleshooting those elements.

UTHealth Houston is the most comprehensive academic health center in the UT System. Data Center Operations (DCO), under the direction of the Infrastructure Team at UTHEALTH, operates the university's primary data centers at UCT, Guhn Rd, and in the AWS and Azure clouds. DCO also administers standards for other data centers that are a part of the UTHealth campus. It consists of five main areas: Infrastructure & Operational Support, Database & Application Support Group, Datacenter & Operational Support, the Cloud team, and the Virtualization team.


Position Summary:

Responsible for the day-to-day activities related to system stability, reliability, and security.


Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Utilizes appropriate procedures and processes necessary to ensure the safety and integrity of organizational servers, data systems, file structures, computer operating systems, and computer system software.
2. Installs, maintains, configures, and upgrades UNIX operating systems to improve the system's reliability, safety, and performance.
3. Works with Network Security Analyst to ensure the security and integrity of computer operating systems and supporting software by detecting hackers and ensuring remote access is encrypted.
4. Ensures data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operations in conjunction with the Disaster Recovery & Security Analyst.
5. Performs basic and intermediate level shell and kernel programming and testing.
6. Conducts studies of projected enhancements in hardware and software and presents recommendations to management.
7. Conducts performance measurement and evaluation of the servers to ensure Service Level Agreements (SLA) are met.
8. Implements security and disaster recovery according to established standards, policy and guidelines.
9. Participates in all phases of total system planning and in the generation of justifications and specifications for facility requirements and enhancements.
10. Implements system software projects.
11. Presents technical briefings.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.


Certification/Skills:

Required:

  • Foundational IT Skills: Strong server and IT infrastructure troubleshooting skills are required. To fulfill this will require a working knowledge of networking, DNS, server best practices,
  • Customer Service / Collaboration / Transparency: Customer service, collaboration, and transparency are pillars of the Data Center Operations mindset and critical to the success of our mission.
  • AWS Cloud Administration: At least six months to one year of AWS Cloud Administration in an enterprise environment, including deployment of IAAS and SAAS solutions, configuration, security, and troubleshooting of specialized systems and applications. Need to have a working knowledge of storage sub-systems related to system configuration and optimization.
  • AWS Cloud Management: Knowledge of automating management and log analysis using AWS’s tools. Experience troubleshooting breaks/fixes, daily interaction with peers and customers for all things AWS Cloud, and participation in on-call rotation.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to understand project methodology and project management. Use of Microsoft Teams and M365 tools such as Planner.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Ability to communicate written and oral to various audiences. Must have the critical thinking skills to solve problems and implement workable solutions. Must be able to resolve all existing and newly discovered problems to move the project towards completion. Must be able to work in a team and keep on track with projects when working alone.

Additional skills that would be a plus for this position:

  • Experience with Scripting inPython and working with JSON/YAML files
  • Knowledge of AWS Services like VPC, EC2, RDS, Lambda and CloudFormation
  • Knowledge of Networking basics: IP addressing, Routing, DNS

Minimum Education:

Bachelor’s degree, training in information technology, or related experience in lieu of education.


Minimum Experience:

At least One (1) year of experience in information technology support and systems administration in diverse environments. Preferred experience with the network and server hardware, software, and security tools that UTHSC-H has deployed in its information technology infrastructure.


Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
